Major Sandeep Unnikrishan from Bangalore Killed in Mumbai Firing

Bangalore, Nov 28: Joining the long list of fallen heroes during the counter-terrorist operations in Mumbai — Vijay Salaskar, Ashok Kamte, Hemant Karkare and others — Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan of the Indian Army on deputation with the NSG.
Little is known about him except that he went on deputation to the NSG in January last year. The parents of the 28-year old Major are based in Bangalore and his ancestral home was in Kozhikode district of Kerala. He was seriously injured on Thursday night during the operations and passed away earlier on FridayNovember 28.
Sandeep had married just a year ago and his family is based in Yalahanka in Bangalore. Sandeep is said to have studied in Frank Anthony School in Bangalore and right from his younger days, he had a strong desire to join army. Initially though his father objected, Sandeep was firm in his decision and joined Indian army.
Major Unnikrishnan was with the 51 Special Action Group of the force and was with the NSG on deputation.
He has been with the Black Cat commando force for the last two years. An officer of the Bihar Regiment, he was commissioned in the Indian Army in June 1999.
The officer had joined the NSG on deputation in January 2007 after having served two tenures with his battalion in counter insurgency and counter terrorism roles. His father is a retired employee of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
