Udupi, Dec 4: ‘Shasti Mahotsav’ was celebrated at the historically famous Sri Subramanya Temple, Sooda, near here, on Thursday December 4. This temple is one among the ancient Skanda-dedicated temples olocated in Karkala taluk, of the district.

Special pujas are being offered at the temple as it was believed that it was constructed by Sage Bhargava in ancient times.  It is significant that those who have no original ‘Nagabana’ arrive at the temple to offer milk at the Nagabana here believing it to be their own.

The devotees arrive at the temple in large numbers during Srusti Mahotsav and seek  blessings for children, prosperity, health, and wealth. They seek the intercession of the divine by offering various pujas including ‘Nagatambila’, ‘Nagatanu’, and ‘Ashlesha’.

Traditional agricultural accessories, wooden vessels, sickles, and other household items, that have been used since ages in Tulunadu are available at the stalls put up during the  Mahotsav on the temple premises, and this is a specialty of celebrations here.

Photos & article on ‘Shasti' brought me back my childhood memories growing up within stones throw from the Temple & the way of colorful Ratha procession at Sooda. 40 years ago my late grandfather Mr. Gasper(Babi) Mathias had a small shop & house near the Temple. As a child I spent many moments wandering inside the temple, eating during every celebrations, sleeping at nights inside the temple with other children of my age. Swimming in the holy temple lake & the Sooda river. It was a wonderful & colorful life. As a child I never felt that I was different than all of my Hindu neighbors. My best wishes to all the people around the temple and pray that Almighty God will bless the people of Sooda
