Modi's LPG scheme reduced household air pollution: Study

New Delhi, Dec 8 (IANS): The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that aims to provide every household Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) replacing wood or coal fuel, has been found useful in tackling household air pollution, a new report said.

The study, "The India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative", released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and The Lancet, stated that in 2017 in India 12.4 lakh deaths were caused due to air pollution, of which 4.8 lakh were due to household air pollution.

"There is increasing political momentum in India to address air pollution. Household air pollution is reducing in India faciliated by the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. The findings systematically document the variations among states, which would serve as a useful guide for making further progress in reducing the adverse impact of air pollution in the country," Proffesor Balram Bhargava, Secretary, Health Research, Ministry of Health, and Director General, ICMR, said.

According to the report, reasons for the household air pollution are mainly residential burning of solid fuels for cooking and to some extent heating. The major types of such fuel are wood, dung, agricultural residues, coal and charcoal.

The study found that states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Meghalaya, who stood low in Semi Demographic Index (SDI - a composite measure based on per capita income, average educational attainment and fertility rate), were using more solid fuels.

But it also shot the price up by nearly four times !

Air pollution is caused more by industry gases' discharge and vehicular emission. House hold pollution cannot be curbed 100% because people still have a kiln outside the house to cook boiled rice (that take longer time and a lot of gas) as well as to make hot water for bathing. No, electricity in villages is not constant, they can't use geysers in their bathrooms.

Only the blind will believe minuscule reduction brought by distributing gas cylinders to the lower class of people.

Gas Yojna intent good but a big failure as he increased the price of refill gas to Rs 1000 in some states which they can't afford to pay upfront & wait for the subsidy amount in their account.
Most poor people have reverted back to burning firewood with traditional chula, the data is produced only to appease the PM with no benefit on the ground.
Swacch Bharath initiative which PM claimed in Bihar crores of connections in a short time too was proved a fake claim as reporters went to the places where it was implemented but found only pits dug & in some places the officials themselves marked the pit place & were digging a small pit themselves(the previous day)to reach the target & still no toilets have come up there.
