Udupi: Fire in running train - Passenger’s presence of mind averts major disaster

Udupi, Apr 28: A major fire disaster in running train was averted at around 1.30 am on Sunday, April 28, due to the presence of mind of a lady passenger.

This incident occurred on Nizamuddin Express (train no 12618) that was going to Ernakulam from Mumbai, when the train was approaching Kambadakone, which is at a short distance from Byndoor railway station.

The fire was noticed in the AC coach of the train. At first this was not noticed by anyone as the passengers of the train were fast asleep. However, a lady passenger who was to alight at Kundapur station noticed this and immediately alerted the railway officials. The train was stopped immediately.

It is said that the cause of the fire was the short circuit in the AC coach. Except minor injuries during breaking of the glass of the AC coach, no other injury is reported. The bogie in which the fire was noticed was separated from the rest of the train and alternative arrangement for the travel of the passengers of that bogie was made and the train was sent to Ernakulam.

    An electrical short circuit should instantly trip the fuse on that circuit. Railways should investigate and understand why fuse was not tripped and wiring got hot enough to catch on fire. Maintenance or design flaw???
    Secondary equipment should be smoke detector to alert when fire is for some other reason. Also carriage should have portable fire extinguishers.

    Appreciation not only with words, but railway authorities should recognize and reward the lady passenger with incentives or promotions for alerting officials, saving people and the property from great disaster.

    I am very scared of travelling in India be it on road, rail or air. There are no safety systems at all. For e.g: in this incident if there was smoke or fire detector in the bogie it would have given indication to passengers as well as the driver of the train of the mishap.
    But our country gives importance only to the safety of Gau Matha and not the human beings.
    Anyway it is just a matter of 25 more days now. Then India will truly beocme Rama Rajya when BJP will be sent to make chai with ketli

    @Chetana mangalore,I dont agree with your arguement of nowhere saefty in India.But thats not the reason to hide and sit inside the room.Who knows even in your room too something may happen .Thatswhy noone knows where is the safe place?nowhere.Something can happen even in a safe thought place.you yourself certainly heard about colombo .People went to have party,holiday from billionars three children and nobody had the luck to return.So simply believe on God ,be sure of your steps and mind.and enjoy the fresh air. When something happens ,there will be someone comes to help like this lady was at the right time and rightplace.And you too need not hesitate to help one when it is somewhere cries for help.so simple it is.Railway must honour this lady for her courage and informing.
