Congress win will make things lot simpler, say edits

New Delhi, May 17 (IANS) : The victory of the Congress party in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections has made a lot of things simpler for the country and those at the helm of affairs, feel editorials of leading English dailies in the country.

"The Congress holds all aces. The prime ministership will not be up for bargaining, as some of the smaller players were hoping. For President Pratibha Patil, the task on hand couldn't be simpler: there is no need to consult constitutional experts to decide on whom to invite to form the next government," an editorial in The Hindu said Sunday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) campaign was criticized by some of the newspapers.

"For, anybody who built a campaign on negativism, prejudice, victimhood and vengeance has been demolished," the Indian Express edit said.

BJP's Prime Minister-in-waiting L.K. Advani's ambition is likely to remain unrealized, different editorials have pointed out about the 81-year-old leader.

The Hindustan Times front-page edit said: "If the mandate of elections 2009 tells us something loud and clear, it is: governance pays... India's voters believe Mr (Manmohan) Singh's government is the right one to take India forward in these unsteady times. It is now up to the new unfettered, unhindered UPA government to show what it can do with our future."

While the edits were nearly uniform in saying that the vote in favour of the Manmohan Singh government was decisive, the Left parties came in for some special treatment from all newspapers.

The Tribune's front page editorial said: "A strange kind of hubris and the self-rectitude that have marked the Left policy and campaign led to an attitude that did not allow it to see how much ground had slipped from under its feet, despite the fact that one-third of the countrymen are living in poverty and the jobless are growing in numbers by the day. Despite eight decades of existence and an impressive record of historic blunders, Mr Prakash Karat and his comrades, who perhaps will stay with him because of habit, are left with no choice but to lick their wounds waiting with eternal hope for the revolution they learnt about in textbooks of little relevance to the 21st century India."

The Times of India's front-page editorial said that the electorate had reposed "their faith in the Congress, the Gandhis and Manmohan Singh".

"Manmohan Singh returns to office largely unencumbered by the demands and conditions that his UPA partners have placed on him, leading to compromises that weren't in the best interest of the nation.

"There is an amazing grace and beauty about the way India goes to elections every five years," the Times edit said complimenting the Indian democracy and its unexpected results.

HEY RACHNA YOU JUST WANT TO COMMENT ON BJP SO LOOSING OUT OF SENSES. WHEREAS YOU CLEARLY KNOW THAT THERE WAS UPA LED GOVT IN MAHARASTRA AND CENTRAL. SO THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT 26/11 MUMBAI ATTACK AND NOT BJP.

Congrats to the all the modern ,highly educated and dynamic leaders of the Congress Party! You truly deserve the victory. Especially Rahul Gandhi. All success for this party''s election victory goes to you specially. It was indeed very heart-warming to read how you spent time with the poor masses of rural India, sharing with them their simple meals and spending nights with them to understanding their difficulties first hand inspite of being privelaged in many ways yourself. This years elections prove that ancient ideologies based on communal violence and hatred adopted by some of the defeated parties such as BJP, RSS to win the elections proved to be a disaster as their ancient, backward and medeival theme was not successful in fooling the young and educated new generation of Indians who would prefer to live in unity with all Indians belonging to different faiths and work in resolving various issues in our country. I support all Indians who beleive that Mother India and her children truly deserve to have young ,dynamic , educated and like minded leaders such as Rahul Gandhi and several other experienced leaders in the congress party to preserve and protect her from inflicting more harm to her in the name of religion and creating disunity among Indians as done by opposition parties. Therefore we are truly proud of you Rahul and for your party''s victory. JAI HO BHARAT MAATA!

Unconditional support from various parties pouring in. My friend.. don''t rub your head to the floor in disgust. If BJP had won this election they would have not begged but licked the foot of Jayalalitha, Nithish Kumar, Mayavathi or other independents support. Jai Congress Jai Hindustan...

Mr. Nagesh Nayak you probably did not read newspapers or watch the news on T.V. Were your BJP leaders also not wooing alliances and begging other parties to join them before the election results ? God forbid if they had to win they too would have been dancing to the tunes of their allies. Don''t point a finger at others. You see there are three more fingers pointing back at you.

It is history repeating it self which goes to prove Indians need a foreigner (Sonia - not anymore) to bring about change. We see many souls still supporting parties based on religion, caste, language etc. They blindly talk anti others forgetting they are taking against other Indians only based on religion. Divide and rule was British policy and some fanatic groups are trying that strategy without much success. They could well use the services of a gora to help them to succeed. Its time for all Indians to change that narrow mindset and progress.I see light at the end of the tunnell with this UPA victory.

Mr. Guru the attack on the parliament was during the time of BJP. Why did''nt they hang Afzal and many others involved in crime (during their regime) immediately after the crime. It is because of your Mr. Advani''s dirty politics of destroying Babri Masjid that we are suffering in the hands of terrorist today. Was there any communal disharmony before that ?

I remember how peacefully we lived in Bombay during our childhood celebrating Christmas, ID and Diwali as one family in the neighbourhood. The BJP could not digest this communal harmony and planted the seed of hatred among us.

    1. This time the results were affected more by local issues rather than national issues In Kerala, Left lost because of in fighting and lack of reforms In West Bengal, left lost because of reforms In Orissa, Bihar, Gujarat, MP & Chattsigadh it was good governance by state governments (Note that these are NDA governments "except" Orissa) In Rajastan, NDA lost because of in fighting and alienation of Gujjars In AP it was fractured opposition which helped Congress In Maharashtra, Right wing votes got split In Karnataka, NDA honey moon is still not over and caste equation is still valid The surprising element is only UP where congress regained some of its past glory and may be TN where DMK fared well. The point is, in the above example, acceptance of Manmohan Singh /Congress or rejection of Advani does not figure. In the absence of strong national issues, local issues took over and this time worked in favour of Congress. NDA is in an un enviable position that its policy is not different from UPA so what is there to fight? 2. Manmohan Singh''s clean image definitely attracted younger voters. Rahul Gandhi''s honesty is laudable, but how many people listened to him in the first place? So Rahul factor was not entirely true. His speeches in election rallies may be good but only Congress supporters go to his rally! 3. Sacking of Shivaraj Patil and making Chidambaram as Home minister countered the effect f 26/11 4. It is high time that BJP understood that the younger voters are not interested in religion much. "Hindu Religion" as such is slowly fading away. Can we call ourselves Hindus just because we are borne Hindus. If BJP wants to regain Hindutva, they must modernise their views about Hindutva itself. 5. Hope that Congress must not get carried away by its success. After all, they did not manage to get even 50% of the seats in the first place. People like Mulayam Singh, Karunanidhi and others must be restrained. If they can dump these allies including Lalu and get Nitish and Biju Patnaik, it would improve their image and acceptability.

The UPA Government should also see to it as to how a new law can be introduced with the consensus of BJP to restrict the number of political parties, at least for Lok Sabha elections, which if otherwise continues will not only de-stabilise the country but also be a mockery to democracy.
