Six-storey building collapses in Dubai: Report

Dubai, Aug 16 (KT):  Twenty-one workers had a narrow escape when a six-storey building that was under construction in the Deira area collapsed on Sunday, a police officer said.

No one was injured, but nearly a dozen cars were destroyed.

Sniffer dogs searched the rubble till late at night.

The building on Al Ittihad Road at the Galadari Intersection, next to Ramada Continental Hotel, collapsed around 3.30pm, said Brigadier Khalil Al Mansouri, director of General Department of Criminal Investigation.

He said 21 workers were inside the building when they heard the crackling sound. Ten of them rushed to safety, and the remaining 11 were later evacuated, along with people from neighbouring buildings, minutes before the building collapsed.

Colonel Ahmed  AL Sayeq, deputy director of Dubai Civil Defence, said the neighbouring buildings were evacuated for fear that water leakage in the ground may have caused the collapse.

The Acting Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazina, said Hazaa Contracting and Bait Al Emarat Engineering Consultants, the building’s developers, will be investigated in coordination with Dubai Municipality.

Marwan Abdullah, head of Building Licensing Unit, Dubai Municipality, said that a team of experts were examining the site.

“We felt tremors and looked outside and saw something like smoke,” said Ishraq Hibib, 17, who lives in Yasmeen building, about 100m from the site .

Ali Hassan, another resident in the area, said, “While I was having lunch I heard a noise and I thought that it was an earthquake. We saw cars under the concrete and glass that covered them.”

Office workers in the area also thought an earthquake had occurred.

“I’m about 400m away. I experienced a jerk in our building and thought it was an earthquake,” said Zainudheen Parissery.

In one way, Mr. Nagesh is right. If this happened in India, many of the readers would have lambasted India. I just want to say that accidents can happen anywhere. I too was surprised when this happened in Dubai, which boasts of good infrastructure and top engineers and companies. Thank god, there were no casualties.

An analogy would suffice to understand above situation : India has vast railway network and thousands of trains. For one train accident incidenty in India reported by all media including BBC. Same is the situation over the few years dxb has build hundreds and thousands buildings.. From % of point of view, error could happen in any construction.

Risk factor for any even for any construction can’t be avoided including world’s tallest building . It is worthless to point out India’s building better than Dubai or Dubai building is better than India as construction material varies for different regions.

Never comment on people who don''t know what they write and don''t waste your time thinking what to comment on it. I would advise people not to stay in old buildings which could take their life one day.

Its really shocking to know the collapse. One cannot rule out negligence, earthquake or the quality of construction. We have to thank Almighty for his mercies as there were no casualities. But this is not the time to demonstrate patrioatic spirit as Mr.Nagesh proclaimed. Lets think human beings dwell there above all our own countrymen are everywhere. The recent breakage of flyovers and metroline in India forgotten or what???

Mr. Nagesh Nayak is right, but he should know that most of engineers and employees are expatriates. Ultimately we expatriates take the blame.

Hello Mr. Nagesh, Should the readers not call you back to Mangalore where each and every corner of the city is dug up for roadworks ? Falnir road is totally closed, resulting with no city buses passing through there. The Contractors complete just one Km of a stretch at one place and dig up somewhere else. When the hotel near Jyoti caught fire, each and every road passing through Jyoti were clogged. What are you doing in Bangalore ? If working in Gulf is wrong isn''t doing so outside Mangalorean wrong too ?

The Emirates News channel said that the part of the building collapsed within minutes. Thank God that there were no casualties. The Dubai Police, Ambulance, Fire service are prompt on scence whenever such accidents occur and I have high regards for them. If at all accidents happen, its because of greed of some people who are always in a hurry either to complete the projects or go somewhere.

Hello nagesh nayak.. Once again you come up with your nasty comments.. In dubai and middle east, There are hardly such mishap take place. If it happens then the developers, builders licence is cancelled with the immediate effect. but in india, Many such incidents takes place, No action will be taken and builders still build the building compromising with the quality. For ex Take the Metro development in Delhi, So many times Mishap has taken place after starting the delhi metro project. Has any action been taken so far?
