Bantwal: Fearing poor performance in exam, second PU student commits suicide

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal (SP)

Bantwal, Mar 7: Second PU happens to be a crucial stage, performance in which can make or mar one's future or career. This puts enormous pressure on the minds of the students and therefore the people close to them need to assure them that poor performance in this examination is not the end of the road.

In an unfortunate incident reported from Vogga located within the limits of the rural police station here, a second pre-university (PU), science stream, student jumped into a well and ended his life. This incident happened at around midnight on Friday, March 6.

The student who gave up his life in this fashion was Nandan, a student of SVS School here. Nandan was a brilliant student. He had obtained 94 percent marks in SSLC examination and continued to perform excellently in the PU class.

Nandan has left behind a letter in which he has explained that he decided to end his life as he expected that his performance in the physics examination which he had attempted could be below the expected level. He felt that the question paper on this subject was tough and feared that he might not get the marks which he was hopeful of getting.

On Friday night, the student was seen to be studying even till 12 am. At 12.30 am, his mother got up and saw that her son was not to be seen. The family members began to search for him fervently, upon which his mobile phone was found in the garden. His mortal remains were found inside a nearby well.

Bantwal (rural) police station sub-inspector Prasanna and other staff visited the spot and registered a case.

This is really sad and disturbing. I too scored a high percentage in 10th and started rethinking about 12th std as well. I didn't like preparing for exams I didn't want to write. At least he should've spoken to one person. There was always a re-exam if he failed it. This news must go to all the first PU people out there who are thinking the same thing this dude thought. They must be told that it's okay to fuck up. Parents must keep re-iterating it to them, casually. This is really sad. My condolences to his family and hope he rests in peace wherever he is.

Suicide is not the ultimate solution for all the circumstances undergone through life . He might be a topper even if he has focused on the remaining subjects. His parents must have consoled him after his physics exam and should not have left him alone to study till 12 in the midnight . His mother must be with him. Even i too am a 2nd puc student , i too have not my exam well ,but i am happy with what i have done in my exam. I pray to God to console him family , and let his soul rest in peace ......

Very sad that a young boy fearing of poor performance in exams ended his life. This is day by day increasing rapidly.Something must be done to save this young lives.Sure everyone has anxiety in final exams is normal.but one should be prepared for it by lecturers and parents too .Parents must give the security that some marks less or more is not important to them but person. He /she should go to exams hall with self conscious minded ,and not unsure. That makes them easier. There are so many other jobs than a academic career. In case one fails once ,take up the next chance.Career can be made in every job.not everyone is a genie.Genies too have their problem.Other sides too much stuff for students to study ,less times, often classes are cancelled, less time .Govt should consider this and make students more time .Students too take studies seriously, and study not last minute.Heartfelt sympathy to family.may his soul rest in peace.

Students should be given proper guidance about de linking marks sheet with success in life...Indian colleges must stop manufacturing just high scoring job seekers, instead we need to train our kids in life skills and assure them even with average marks they can succeed in life and this must be done well ahead of exams for both students and parents..

RIP dear Nandan. nowadays parents more curious about their childrens progress. because of small family they expect their child to be a scholar. which may not be in their genes. every one wants their child to be an engineer or doctor. as if other profession s are not honourable. this makes the children to go into depression. very sad .

So sad. What a tragedy. Academic pressure towards high performance is the reason for all. Now a days children have become so fragile, they take everything so seriously. They hv become very sensitive. Many a times they don't share what is going on in their mind.we can't predict their response to any situation.

    Suicide is definitely not acceptable
I had a tendency of suicide in 1984 when I was in 2nd PU Mangalore when I was caught for malpractice on final exam
But God was always merciful to me
It was god's plan I believe now
I was far away from God
This incident brought me more closer to God
And I did my nursing course
Now I am working in Kuwait as a male nurse
    With high salary
That's why I request all students don't be tensed
If you are failing try other ways
As Jesus told Peter cast your net the other side
In the same way try your way from other side

Something is terribly wrong with current generation.
Or something massively wrong with the parents of this generation,
Either parents are pushing their sons/daughters to get superlative results and often compare them to their neighbours or relatives children...…….which is totally wrong. And shows dumb side of some parents.

My son a decade ago failed miserably in graduation, and he walks into my room late evening and says ….." I have failed in a key subject in the finals"...… I immediately tell him, its all right try again without any emotion, although I felt anger as a father as it was natural, however immediately something told me inside my hear/mind …...life does not end with exams, And looking at my calm disposure he started crying and I asked him why is he crying like a baby??

He said, ….I thought you would shout at me and throw me out of the house...…..I told him learn from defeat ...look at how and where you made mistakes? what kind of friends you were hanging around with? And your habbits?
If you want to change situations in your life......you must first change yourself in terms of discipline, time to study , kind of friends you want to hand around with and your habits, if you work on these, success will be yours...….
After a year he passed his graduation …...today he is a part owner of a company and doing his job/work like any other employee and respects one and all without any file and rank approach.
And that humbleness is the corner stone of his success and his happy life

We parents shouldn't let our emotions run amok? one exam failed or few marks less is only an opportunity in life to learn/unlearn/re learn

    Lets wake up,

At the first instance I wish to condole the death of young Nandan. There is something seriously wrong with the way board exams are handled by the teachers, parents and students.

I don't agree with 'make or mar one's future ' as reported by you.
Students should be counselled individually well before the board exams.Only with the support of teachers and family such incidents can be prevented.

Dear parents please tell your children that you are with them and marks don't matter in the journey of life

Why students take such harsh step for such silly reason??
Yes physics exam was really tough and it'll reduce the overall percentage of the students specially who were expecting to score 90 plus percentage. But this is not the end of the road for life.

Rest in peace Nandan......Students, when you come out of the hall, don't discuss any thing about the answers that you have written and compare with those if others.

Some students simply boast answer is this and answer is that. Once the paper goes in the hands of invigilators what's the use of discussion?

Just waste of time and mental harassment. Instead, go home and concentrate on your next exam.. and do well... If didn't perform well, leave it..

earth will not stop moving... There are alternatives... Parents, please don't shout at the children after the paper.... Be cool... Students, Wish you all the very best in your remaining exams...

The current system of education to be abolished and introduce a new type real life education which they can earn for their livelihood after finishing education. What someone expect from fresh graduates without experience only a piece of paper that he qualified graduate for nothing !! Its only make you paper tiger not real time earner !

Millions of doctors and engineers produced by this country ! did someone invented anything after the graduation ! Is any Indian Doctor handle CORONA Virus ! or find a medicine for that ! Joke of the day is people are suggesting eat onion or garlic water !

To build a PUMPWELL CIRCle we no need of ENGINEER we need only a MASTRI !! lol

Yes, to score perfect or 100 out of 100 is the aim of institutes & they push students towards it by relentless studies & model question answers which fetch those sort of marks if the points in them are mentioned in the answer sheets.
Most of the students forget what they have learnt within a short span of few months, which is mockery of present education system that wants to produce robots(uniform).
Creativity is not appreciated & the lecturers of our era who had passion & a way to teach which made a tough subject easy & loved by students instead of getting sleep when reading are missing as they too are pressurized by their employers to produce results for the pay they are getting paid.
Commercial activity is now education & advertisement in papers & boards that are sported outside institutions with the name, photos & their scores is exhibition materials, which makes it a cutthroat competition among themselves to get more students with huge fees are bane of our education system.
Phds are made compulsory for lecturers, have they invented anything other than getting a doctorate degree, I don't think so while some designate themselves as Scientist!
Coming to Corona virus infection= No scientist here or outside India has invented any medicine for any viral diseases other than vaccines which have their own limitations. Our own body is capable of overwhelming them if we help it by supporting our immune system.
According to 1 estimate there were & are 3,20,000 viruses & out of it only 219 are known to us & no vaccines can be produced to combat all of them or is feasible, the best thing is improve & support our immune system which only Ayurveda focuses while our modern system neglects sadly.
