Mangaluru, Oct 9: Bishop of the diocese Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, on October 9 disbursed financial aid to the second batch of needy students. The programme was compered by Fr Vincent DSouza, designate director of CODP.
Fr Vincent first welcomed the bishop and all the students along with their parents who attended the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Bishop Peter Paul said that CODP, on behalf of the diocese, disburses financial aid to needy students every year. Even though the collection was poor this year, the diocese still contributed to this cause. He encouraged the students to read newspapers on a daily basis as this would enhance their knowledge, and moreover through education one can achieve success.
Shilpa D'Souza, the coordinator of SPARSHA project took up a session on cancer awareness. She explained the signs and symptoms of cancer and advised regular check-ups for early detection of this disease. She told the participants to give up tobacco, alcohol and junk food. Shilpa encouraged the participants to consume organic food, and also grow organic vegetables in their kitchen gardens. She suggested consuming Lakshman Phal (Graviola plant) as an anti-oxidant fruit to prevent cancer.
Thereafter, the bishop disbursed education aid amounting to Rs 2,42,500 to around 45 applicants. Praveen, Philomena, Osvita and Veena of CODP assisted in distributing the cheques and vouchers to the needy students.
