Scary, thrilling.. the Mangalore Airport Experience

Mangalore, May 22 (IANS) Scary, thrilling, makes one pray to the almighty for a safe landing - are some of the expressions that come to people who fly into or out of Mangalore's airport whose "table top" runway is perched on top of a hill and surrounded by deep gorges.

The view from the air as the plane approaches the airport at Bajpe, about 20 km from this bustling commercial and education centre, is a sight to behold.

Because of air turbulence, many times the planes drop height suddenly, making passengers gasp.

Children on board roar with joy or let out a gasp at the sharp fall.

Technically, the airport meets all the set domestic and international safety standards like the safety area around the runway.

Pilots too say it is not dangerous but does test their skills when landing and taking off, particularly during landings.

The runway is called the "table top" because of the deep gorges surrounding it.

The airport opened in 1951 as the Bajpe Aerodrome when then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru arrived on the maiden flight.

The airspace over the city and its vicinity is among the most turbulent in the country.

"Travel to Mangalore is actually scary. I have experienced some major turbulences and drops," said G. Ganga, who often takes a flight to the city from Chennai to visit pilgrim centres nearby, including Sringeri.

"At times, the way the aircraft rattles, it makes you feel really awkward - like weightlessness. You just grab your arm rest tight and pray," Ganga told IANS from Chennai.

The "risky nature" of the airport runway had made the authorities conduct aircraft landing rehearsals ahead of then president R. Venkataraman's visit to Mangalore in 1992, an official recalled.

The president visited Mangalore to participate in a function organised by Corporation Bank, which is headquartered here.

In May 2006, the airport got a second runway made of concrete and it is this runway -- 2,450 meters or 8,000 feet long - that is being used.

Last year, the government built a new terminal building at the airport, which was formally inaugurated by Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa last week.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) dismissed suggestions that the "table top" airstrip was risky. It meets aviation norms, they asserted.

"Their was enough landing area and over 90 meters of runway end safety (RES) area," an AAI official said.

About 10-12 flights operate daily at Bajpe airport, the official said.

One unfortunate incident doesnt mean that there is a major error in the project. As far as the Airport is concerned its not like KSRTC Dippo wherein a sudden project comes up. There are national and international regulations, tests and finally the projects are in place. No hanky - panky as far as the Norms are concerned. It is monitored by a neutral body and implemented by experts.
Remember human skills works to an extent, many a times 'Fate' what we call makes the difference. Well,Even in advanced countries similar and even worst situations take place that doesnt mean its the end of the story. Every tragedy is also a learning experience. As we speak about the death of 158 people let us not forget 8 of them survived.

Mr.Kamath, closing the Airport is not the solution, there were 32,000 landing in this Airport. Yes no doubt it is tough Airport for landing. We should go to route of such causes and to ensure such mistakes are not repeated. Improve the technologies etc.

Yes Mr Kamath its absolutely right what you say. There is a lot of flat land in M'lore and around. Its really scary... landing in M'lore. Each time the plane touches the ground and you hear the breaks.....you pray to the Almighty to protect us from any danger .

Even an expert can make mistakes when it is one of the dangerous airports to land. Its not only the landing and taking off but the way to reach the airport itself is also so risky with sharp turns curves around the hills.

May the Almighty give strength to the families who have lost their loved ones.God Bless all the selfless... work done by the locals.May the departed souls rest in peace.

quote by daiji "Because of air turbulence, many times the planes height suddenly, making passengers gasp."
    agreeable ...
but same time such practices saves lot of fuel..and its fact that now a days most air flights are giving importance to cost cutting system as in other business..and this type of landing is one of such pracitse to minimise the fuel expenses..
another cost cutting system is over work load to pilots and other crew members to save cost..but ..but here by playing with safety of passenger as above ..(i think competition or recession are reason for such activities)
People with experince up to 10 to 15 year in air travel can definitely recognize the difference between 90s air landing & take off system (in some air flights not all ) & in 2010 air landing system..
people who visits bajpe regularly for last 10 years can easily share the differences..i think so..

I think Mr.Ganga and all the other who are scared of flying from Mangalore should stop using this airport. That would solve the problem.

Mr.Kamath would you bear the cost of the new airport? If you are I am there to support you fully.

The airport meets all the standards prescribed. There are more dangerous airports around the world. http://www.oddee.com/item_93109.aspx

Just one incident doesnt call for the airport to be closed. In the same way there are so many accident on the road. Maybe you guys should sit at home and not travel by road too as they are unsafe, cause more people have died on mangalore's roads than in this tragic incident.

Yes, landing in Mangalore is most exhilerating if you ignore the risk factor. Like an eagle circling the skies to swoop down on its prey the majestic aircraft aligns itself with the runway, presenting the passengers a thumb-nail picture so pretty that i feel proud to belong to this paradise on earth! A quilt-work of green fields, miniature orchards of palms, red-tiled match-box cottages, separated by narrow ribbons of roads with toy cars running on them....it is simply breathtaking! To speak of it at a time like this may seem frivolous but the fact remains that the approach to Mangalore airport is one of the most beautiful scenes ever.
But, the AAi had promised the Karnataka High Court that it will the safety measures in Mangalore airport in resonse to the PIL filed by an NGO, when the new runway was sunder construction. Did that really happen? Why not? Like every other agency in this country the game of playing with people's lives goes on. Let this be a wake-up call to overhaul the corrupt system and stop white-washing the defective parts and people.
Mangaloreans the world over may not wish to close down this picturesque airport, but simply undate the infrastructure ( longer runway, more spill-over area, more approach roads for emergencies and more safety measures)Can the AAi look into this?

I call for a new airport for mangalore..let us close this bajpe airport once the new one comes up..that is the only way the central govt. can genuinely give tribute to the tragedy of the year.

It indeed is intriguing that our so-called intelligent engineers found a table top airport for mangalore..come on guys..Mlore is not a hillstation like say Leh/Srinagar..There are so many places around mangalore which are much more feasible for an Airport. I am sure if companies like MRPL can find acres of land that too bordering the highways, why not a public firm like AAI..Why AAI put so many lives into genuine risk knowing it beforehand..Landing a plane on an airport should not be tough and demanding like say hitting an international T20 century..Pilots are not supermen plzz...

Who is responsible for this mistake..It is excruciatingly shameful and my heart goes out to the innocent lives..May the souls rest in peace.

Landing in Mangalore airport is indeed a horrific experience and if for 60 years there has been no mishap, it is because of the 'Hand of the Almighty'. Our so called 'MINISTERS" must know that before commenting on the safety of the same.

Some risks are just not worth taking especially when it means risking the lives of innocent people who look to our 'elected members' to see to the smooth functioning of of day to day affairs. Our roads in Mangalore is another issue in itself. We are all accountable for the actions and decisions that we make. May the souls of the dear departed rest in peace and may God give consolation to the grief stricken family members.
