Puttur, Jan 7: Specifically for the children, a children's park was created in the city out of the grants of the municipality here. But now, on account of non-maintenance, the park has turned into a den of the drunkards.
This park was set up in a half an acre plot in front of the government hospital at the heart of the city eight years back by spending Rs 13 lac. The municipality maintained it for a year and then stopped. The park could have been a place for rejuvenation and entertainment for the children but the fact that it has become a centre for the drunk people to meet is tragic.
The park is getting dilapidated in the recent past. The park came into being on account of the interest undertaken by the then municipal president, Rajesh Bannur. Thereafter, the park has failed to achieve its objective. The park has been provided with facilities like a cave for the children, open air theatre for staging children's play and other programmes, etc.
Once the park was created and left for use of the public, a handful of programmes were held there. The park has failed to become a centre for the children to play and get entertained. Even the parents of the children have stopped visiting the park.
Local MLA, Sanjeeva Matandoor, said that the municipal officials would be instructed to revive the park and transform it into a centre where different programmes can be held.
