Mangalore June 20: As per the instructions of DK district deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj movement of vehicles were completely restricted on National Highway 48 on Sunday June 20 inorder to drain off slush that has been causing inconvenience to the pedestrians.

Only emergency services like ambulance, fire-service vehicles and the vehicles attending the wedding were allowed to travel on the highway.

The pedestrains had expressed their anguish over the ankle-lenghth slush and  other such frequent problems faced on the highway. The district commissioner who had visited the area had decided to hold a highway bundh from Sunday 8.00 am to Monday 8.00 am.

Meanwhile, the movement of ore-laden heavy vehicles have been banned from traveling on National Highway 17 and 48 from Sunday June 20 to November 15.

The police officials in the Pumpwell road circle were instructed to divert the loaded trucks and heavy vehicles towards Ullal.  The city-based vehicles from Uppinangady, Puttur and Bantwal areas were asked to take a diversion at Melkar Junction and proceed on Konaje- Tokkottu stretch to reach the city.

A silent atmosphere prevailed in the otherwise busy highway.  There were hardly any private vehicles and people were rushing to travel in whatever vehicles they could find to reach their destinations. The heavy trucks were parked on the on the side of the highway.

"With the view to fecilitate smooth movement of vehicular traffic, we have decided to drain off the slush and undertake repair works on the stretch",  said Ponnuraj on Friday.

The repair works which was going on a snail's pace from past three years has suddenly speedend up with just one instrutcion from the DC which has indeed surprised the people of city.

The main cause for failure of roads is due to non availability of path for rain water to flow.If you make proper rain water storms and culverts, any road will survive due to heavy rains.

Excellent initiative by the DC. Bravo!

We need government officers in Mangalore with a finer profile similar to the one our dear DC possess, for a total transformation of the city for better and comfortable living style.

    Great indeed.

What was unexpected and unheard of Mangalore a few years ago is fast coming to be seen and heard. Very indisciplined way of functioning by the administration. There is no much difference between northern states and Karnataka at present. If at all there is some difference then it learnt the former are becoming better and the latter worse.

I thank the DC for banning heavy ore trucks on these roads starting June 20th. Also a good move by the DC to ban movement of vehicles for a day on NH48 for repair work.If people had road sense and followed discipline this could have been avoided but if you observe everyone wants to jump the que(mostly two wheelers and cars and city buses) and so we end up clogging the roads and repairs in such a situation would be impossible.

A good job done by the DC Mr. V Ponnuraj. I hope stopping of the vehicular traffice and providing alternate route was the only option available. Hats off to you DC.

Indeed stopping vehicles' movement is incorrect. Although slow work, it should have been done in a proper way. Vehicles movement, safety is not at all taken into account. Govt is obliged to provide safe and good roads having taken huge tax money for vehicles that too for fifteen years, who knows present vehicles will stand for fifteen years under given road conditions. Even KSRTC must be incurring huge money on maintennance.

THis shows How a COuntry like will function well under a autocracy. Shame on the failure of democracy , IT only adds to the woes of people when certain position yeild so much power its always a invitation for corruption. I am Not raising a alarm that this DC may be corrupt , but a model how DCs could manipulate the system . THe DCs are babus who the british used control the masses and we stuck on to it.

Very Non-sense move. Rather than providing infrastructure or alternate routes for heavy vehicles one want to stop the vehicle movement on NH48.
This is new type of BUNDH. Jay ho..

Instead of building fly over here, they would have made a road and there was no problem at all. Because there was enough space for double road. I'm wondering who's idea behind this fly over!! It seems just to make money!!!

It is total rubbish. There is no reason for that half done flyover and the road from B.C.Road to Pumpwell to remain as it is now for such a long time. That work was to finish years back.Let somebody who is the authority explain it to teh people. instead of passing the buck.

Instead of fixing the roads and making it capable of withstanding heavy vehicular movement we do the opposite “ stop vehicles”. This is India “Mera Barath Mahan” ….. Jai Ho.
