Mangaluru, May 31: Milagres College, here, an institution of higher education, is committed to the holistic development of its students. Even during this intense pandemic, in order to continue the training of students, the college organises a series of student development programmes.
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), in association with different departments of the college, conducted student development programmes aimed at the continuous growth and all-round development of their students through training, awareness and better prospects.
A series of four sessions were conducted thus:
The forum for Human Rights and Anti-Ragging cell of the college organised Student Development Programme-1, titled 'Relationships: Sizzle or Fizzle' on May 26 and 28 from 10.45 am-12.00 noon for I year students of BCom, BSc HS, BSc FND and BSc IDD sections.
Dr Sandra Lobo, HOD of Psychology, Roshni Nilaya, School of social work, was the resource person. She explained how a relationship is actually defined between two genders. She requested the teens to rectify the inequality they face with their trusted people like parents, friends or a therapist. She focused on the three aspects like the law of expectations, difference and self-image which were described by citing a case study.
Fr Michael Santhumayor, the principal, introduced the guest and welcomed the participants. Anju Elsa Thomas coordinator of the forum compered the session and Allette Santhmayer proposed the vote of thanks. 180 students along with the staff members of the respective departments actively participated and benefited from this session.
The department of Languages (Kannada) on May 27 from 3.00 - 4.00 pm organised a Student Development Programme -SDP 2- for the Kannada language students of 1/II-year BCom, BSc FND and BSc IDD titled 'Namage Namma Kannada'.
Professor Sudharani, from the department of Kannada, Alvas Education Foundation (R), Moodbidri was the resource person. In her session she enlightened the students regarding the prominence of the Kannada language and how it has been losing its identity at present. She was of the opinion that the Kannada language is used to the minimum in communication and therefore one of the reasons for fading away. She urged the youngsters regarding the need for its revival and suggested that it could be done easily by using the language in our day-to-day conversation. 60 students participated in the session. Sowmya Kotian programme coordinator proposed the vote of thanks.
The department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics organized a student development programme -SDP 3- on 'The Role of Dietician in Hospital' on May 29 from 3.00 - 4.00 pm.
The resource person was Dt Aruna Mallaya, a senior dietician of KMC Hospital, Mangaluru. She focused on the role played by a dietician in the hospital. She emphasized that in order to become a good dietician he/she should have good knowledge about therapeutic diet, diet counselling, nutrition and along with that a person must have good communication skill and confidence.
It was an interactive session wherein the students’ queries were clarified. Mahima Ruhi, a student representative, introduced and welcomed the resource person. Riya D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks. A total of 100 participants which included students and faculty of the FND department actively participated in this session. The department of Hospitality Science conducted a Student Development Programme-SDP4- on the topic 'Beverage Industry and its Prospects', on May 29 from 11.00 am to 12.00 noon.
Hemraj Shettigar, Flair Bartender, Fushifaru - Maldives, was the resource person. Addressing the students he focused on the importance of the beverage industry, the changing trends and the possible career students could have in the industry. He motivated the students as to how they could begin as a bartender and with hard work in the respective field could lead them to success. The focus of this programme was to enlighten the students on how to build a career in the beverage industry and also become successful Flair Bartender.
Vinod Kumar, managing partner Martiny Mixology, Fr Micheal L Santhumayor, principal, Denzil Celestine D’Costa, head of the department of Hospitality Science were present.
Around 98 members including students and staff were present and benefited from the programme.
