Mumbai, Aug 29: The curtain-raiser ceremony of the first World Konkani Cultural Convention by Mandd Sobhann was held at Rang Sharada Auditorium, Bandra (west), here on Sunday August 29.

Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan inaugurated the programme with the Konkani tradition of presenting a water-filled jug of vessel along with a plate of betel leaves and areca nut to the dignitaries, including heads of music troupes, and also by distributing the invitation cards to them.

CM Ashok Chavan after inaugurating the programme said that he was happy to be accorded with a traditional Konkani honour and observed that Marathi and Konkani have several similarities. The strength of a community lies in fostering its mother tongue. The communities will progress and achieve growth if the government takes appropriate steps to address the various issues concerning the use of mother tongue, he added.

Ronald Colaco, president of the reception committee, in his keynote address said that the Konkani speaking people have contributed immensly to the socio-economic growth of the nation, hence the government must consider extending its support to keep Konkani language alive.

Colaco also said that Konkani as a language has no barrier and is spoken by a cross section of people coming from different creeds, castes and regions. Moreover, Konkani has very strong roots and it is the duty of every Konkani speaking individual to preserve as well as promote the language.

Ronald Colaco's appeal to the Maharashtra CM to set up Konkani Cultural Centre prompted the chief minister to announce that the state government would allot a plot for building the Centre in the city and that it will also grant a sum of Rs 25 lac to Mandd Sobhann in support of the convention.

The state health and family welfare minister Suresh H Shetty, Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes, Bank of Maharastra CEO Allen C A Pereira, Ryan International Group of Education Institutions managing director Grace Pinto and Blossom Fernandes were the guests of honour.

Minister Suresh Shetty said that Konkani is widely spoken by the people regardless of caste, creed or religion. It is a delight that it has grown into a significant Indian language. Nearly 10 lac Konkani speaking people are in Mumbai and about 15 lac in the state, said the minister.

He also assured that the state administration intends to contribute for the setting up of Konkani Cultural Centre for the benefit of the Konkani speaking population, in recognition of their significant contribution to Mumbai.

Grace Pinto in her keynote address said that Konkani and Marathi communities share a special bond. She urged the state administration to reserve at least two seats in the state legislature for the Konkani speaking community, as there is a sizeable number of people of Konkan origin in the state.

Allen Pereira opined that excessive love of western languages was unjustified and that Konkani has embedded itself into contemporary culture.

Appreciating the efforts of Mandd Sobhann in organising the convention, Oscar Fernandes said that Mandd Sobhann has brought international recognition to Konkani and its distinct folklore. Maharashtra has maximum population of Konkani speakers in the country. Although Konkani has been included in the eight schedule of our Constitution, every Konkani speaker has the responsibility to promote and preserve the language, he said.

Mumbai Pradesh Congress women wing president Janet Lawrence D’Souza and executive president Ronald Mendonca were also present on the dais.

Mandd Sobhann Gurkar Eric Ozario delivered the introductory address.

World Konkani Cultural Convention welcome committee president Ronald Colaco dwelt on the splendour of Konkani and extolled the contribution of Mandd Sobhann in promoting Konkani language and culture worldwide.

Fr Ramesh Bandodkar, Lawrence Pinto, Ancy Paladka, Dolphy D’Souza Bantwal, Ronald Gomes, Stany Alvares, Naveen Lobo, Roy Castelino and others honoured the dignitaries.

Lawrence D’Souza Kamani proposed the vote of thanks. Arun Raj Rodrigues compered the programme.

Kapechin Kirnam, Goan dance and song was performed by Elvis Goyes and group, as part of cultural programme.

Mandd Sobhann will be organizing the Konkani World Cultural Convention in Mangalore from November 25 to December 19.

Yes, honestly speaking Konkani language and culture deserves more exposure, but for this every Konkani speaking family will have to take keen interest and an active part to contribute in every way it can to make this a success. I pray and wish that this convention will bear fruit and bring about the much needed succour that Konkani language and culture deserve.

It’s really wonderful to see the Inauguration of World Konkany Convention which was graced by dignitaries especially the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Oscar Fernandes and the others. It’s not the thing we should be looking in who spoke what and how rather let us all Konkani speaking people put our hands together to take forward this by admiring / appreciating the effort taken by the organizers who draw the line and now we will make the road. Congratulations to the organizers and may Almighty bless you all with wisdom and knowledge to accomplish this task.

Thanks to konkani cultural convention and appreciate the various efforts being made to promote and enlighten konkani culture on national level. unfortunately diocease level konkani is not promoted to the optimum. diocease vise Bishops are responsible to spread and promote konkani. However the concerned parish priests must take caluculated initiative to say or arrange prayers and Mass in konkani. I must say konkani is well represented in proper Mangalore but need to be promoted well in broader karnataka.I belong to Balehonnur Parish and ashamed to say that every sunday the main mass being offered in kannada inspite of 90 percent konkani families. Soon the agitation will start to give importance to konkani. It is very nice somebody wants KSA-Mangalore flight to promote konkani. Thanks to konkani brains?

Congratulations ! to Mand Sobhann group and Mr. Eric Ozario and the Organizers of this first world Konkani Cultural Convention. Our great mother tounge has been recognised as one of the finest languages. Surely we should be proud for this. It is nice to see Hon'ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Suresh Shetty, Rajya Sabha member Mr.Oscar Fernandes , World Konkani Cultural Convention Welcome Comittee President Mr. Ronal Colaco, and Rayan International group of education Institutions MD Mrs. Grace Pinto & other eminent Personalities which made an impact for this event. As we know Marathi and Konkani are sister languages. One who speak Konkani can easily catch up Marathi and vice versa. This also helps for mutual growth of culture and tradition in Great Mumbai city and all over India.

Long live Konkani Language! All Konkani lovers, speak konkani, zeo Konkani. All the best.

No doubt I have been a great fan and admirer of Maand Sobhans Konkani work, while congrajulating them for this great event i feel that its just not enough to have glamourous events every year we need to have a broader vision for the growth of konkani launguage and culture. Where do we see ourselves i.e the konkani speaking community and our launguage after 50 years or so?? will such events help us?? I think we need to have more concerete foundation rathere than spending lots of money in vain. Having said that I once again congrajulate Maand Sobhan for their intitiative you people are doing a great job for konkani my only wish is that it your work becomes more constructive that it will last for atleast a century, we need a greater vision to achieve that...jai konkani

“Congratulations” to Mand Sobann for the successful Inauguration of World Konkany Convention which was graced by dignitaries like the Maharashtra Chief Minister and the CEO of the Bank of Maharashtra.

While going through the photo albums, I felt sad to see one of THE greatest yet humble singers of Konkany Henry D’Souza of Ye Ye Katrina fame (brother in law of Oscar Fernandes) sitting alone among the audience instead of being honoured with a seat on the dias among the dignitaries. The contributions of Henry is a monument by itself as he was both an AIR and HMV recognized singers whereas the contributions of one or two people on the dias to Konkany culture is highly questionable.

Interesting to see the CM of Maharastra at the Convention!
Konkani has been gradually eliminated from Maharastra, especially from the Konkan(places like Ratnagiri). The main issue being the Konkani speakers adapting the Marathi language. This may be due to lack of literature, opportunities etc. The attitude of the Maharastra also has not helped - they being not proactive to save Konkani, for obvious reasons.
A similar situation exists in parts of North Goa.

Dear Erric Ozario and team, you are making proud all the Konkani speaking people who are living in Gulf. No doubt it is right step to renovate and energise the Konkani language and strenthen it further. First of all you should start from our churhes in Mangalore with "mass celebrations in Konkani" Eventhough many mangaloreans speak Konkani, when it comes to show their love and respect for the language they prefer "English". I remember the treatment the Joke, when a grandmother poured a jug of hotwater on her grandsons head, after getting frustrated by his english language, the result"Ye mojya main!!" came from the grandsons mouth.Thats the way may be we teach the younger generation to particpate and talk our mother tongue"Konkani"!!!

I urge Erric and his team to use this opportunity to highlight the problems faced by "Mangaloreans who are working in KSA till now dont have a Direct flight to Managalore. All the best for the World Konkani Cultural Convention.
