Mangalore, Jan 14: St Aloysius College, Mangalore is actively mulling the start of a CBSE School from 2012, according to Fr Joseph Rodrigues, SJ, Rector of the College. He made the announcement at the annual Reunion Day of St Aloysius College Alumni/ae Association (SACAA) held at the college campus on January 12, 2011. It was the 131st Founders’ Day of the college, which is now also observed as the annual Reunion Day by SACAA whose Patron is the Rector of the college.
Addressing the old students and their family members, Fr Rodrigues said: “If St Aloysius enjoys such a great reputation and standing today as a premier institution of quality education in coastal Karnataka and the State, it is in a large measure due to the silent, sincere, steady and often unrecognized and unsung service and contribution of our alumni, friends and benefactors who by their loyalty, learning, scholarship, commitment, dedication and hard work have brought the college to the peaks of excellence, creativity and innovation. In fact, this has been one of the salient features of our college that it has been fortunate to have a dedicated group of alumni of excellent record, reputation, honesty and excellence.”
Earlier, speaking as Director of SACAA, Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal of the college, noted the progress of the college from 162 students housed in a bungalow near Bishop’s House in Kodialbail in 1880 to hosting 14,000 students on the present vast campus with modern educational infrastructure. He said: “We are in an enterprise of educational formation of our youth to excel in their life and thus contribute to the development of the nation. This enterprise is like a platform with four legs comprising students, the staff, management and alumni. The most important and strongest among these is the alumni. Without the support and collaboration of our former students we can achieve almost nothing. They are the backbone of our institution”. He thanked SACAA for being friends of the college and continuously supporting its ventures.
The function started with welcome address by Arthur D’Souza, President SACAA, activity-report by Naveen Mascarenhas and concluded with vote of thanks by Michael D’Souza, vice president. The much-enjoyed post-formal function entertainment session was conducted by Sumit Rao. SACAA has now dispensed with the traditional bonfire, highlight of celebrations in earlier years, to avoid environment pollution.
