Tharoor wins hearts, but Kharge to take the votes as he becomes 'official'

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 5 (IANS): As the fight for the top post of the Congress has begun, Shashi Tharoor seems to have won the hearts many, but those do not find a place in the voters list and that's where Malikarjuna Kharge, who has now got the tag of the being the 'official' candidate will help him.

The moment Tharoor's name surfaced as a likely candidate, those who are aligned to the Gandhi family smelt a rat and then things took a different turn. The highlight is that two Keralites are doing their very best to see that another Keralite does not walk away with the honours, when votes are counted after the October 17 polling day.

The two Keralites, who are burning the midnight oil include 81-year-old veteran A.K. Antony and the now closest aide of Rahul Gandhi -- K.C. Venugopal.

According to sources, the 'official' camp got a rude jolt when Tharoor sprang a huge surprise after 16 Congress colleagues of his here put their signature on his nomination form, and from then on the two Kerala leaders seeing the writing on the wall decided to act quickly.

Sources said that calls are now going to all to see that there should be no doubt whom they should vote for.

The day Tharoor landed in Hyderabad to campaign for his candidature, the next day, two-time former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, despite his poor health, was asked to reach Hyderabad to show that even in Tharoor's home state, he does not have the support.

But, when Tharoor boarded the flight to here from Hyderabad, the pilot announced they have a special guest in Tharoor and it was greeted with applause and passengers crowded for a selfie and got autographs.

He reached Kerala on Tuesday for a two-day trip and immediately started drawing huge crowds. When he arrived at the state party headquarters also the scene was no different, but there was one startling difference as none from those who crowded around him when he spoke to the media and were shouting slogans for him, will be voting on October 17.

A media critic on condition of anonymity said if the real supporters of Tharoor and the huge response he is getting in social media and otherwise had votes, then Tharoor is a sure victor.

"The sad fact is those who matter in the Congress party continue to live in the yesteryear philosophy, when a huge percentage of the new generation fails to identify itself with the Nehru/Gandhi family and such people are laughing when they heard that it was 80-year-old Kharge, the 'official' candidate and that too against the dashing Tharoor," said the critic.

Congress trio knows that Kharage will last only for a few years, as he is now 80, whereas if Tharoor is elected leader, he will turn the party around in no time. But the only problem is he doesn't sing DORE ME...Raga.

Kharge or Tharoor both are from Congress and Kharge is experienced Politician aware of Gandhi and non Gandhi Congress members of most States. Most of the Voters know him since long and deserve Candidate. Tharoor still young in Congress party and has future to become President. It is very essential to be known by most of members as well as Voters. Tharoor is well qualified and most of us aware that in Indian Politics education is NOT COUNTED BY VOTERS!!! Popularity, Ideology and execution of policies by them. I wish both of them to unite and work for the Congress party and win the 2024 general elections along with States.

The script of this 'president election' drama is very obvious. Whoever becomes the president, will last only 6months max and will 'resign' for some reason or the other. Like 'cannot concentrate' on regular activities to build the party'. Sonia orRaGa will then take the role 'temporarily' for ever .

Khagre gells well with the Gandhis. Shashi Tharoor is too professional for the post, that requires to agree to RaGa even if he says xhit and loses a state.

If The old guard sycophant Kharge is elected it will be the FINAL NAIL in THE COFFIN for the Congress. These SO CALLED loyalists of the Ghandhi Trio have only self interest and will for their survival blindly follow the diktats of the Italian, there will be no change in the functioning of the congress which in present day scenario means they will continue to lose election after election. The brilliant Tharoor is the only one who can bring about a change and ensure that Congress can be revived despite the blunders of Rahul and his Mother who have no clue about taking on the BJPigs head on. Simple equation Kharge IN Congress Rout guaranteed, Mr. Tharoor wins There is a ray of hope …

Agree with you. To ensure there is a change and take the party on the winning path. It requires very hard work . Shashi Taroor will surely make the party members slog their back sides off. Their work will be monitored and performance will be appraised. Non performers will be shown the door. I doubt the Congress old bags including RaGa want to work like this. They are used to relaxing and not questioned at all. So for sure, its going to be Khagre . If Shashi Taroor becomes the president , he wont last long. 6 months to a year and then RaGA will be the permanent make shift president.

Mr. Tharoor may be of a less politically experienced leader, but his level of education, exposures to international community and charismatic personal characteristics are commendable and mismatch to any opponents within Congress or in BJP. I see him possessing all qualities to be our prime minister in the coming days.

Tharoor is a good choice , has a global image and can draw the youth. But he has one draw back, the oldies in the Congress may not like him as he will be strict and a tough task master. These old guys are used to be relaxed , laid back and no accountability of work and performance. Tharoor will not accept such attitude and hence he may not be accepted . Even RaGa for that matter may not like this as Tharoor will surely question and advise RaGa in working more for survival or victory .RaGa wants to enjoy travelign abroad. So considering all these factors, I think Tharoor will not be accepted or voted out. Khagre will be best bet for a bindaas work culture wiht no repsonsibility for both RaGa and the Golden oldies.
