Kundapur, Dec 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced projects like Khelo India and Fit India in order to promote sports in the country and to make the countrymen win more medals in Olympics, Asian and Commonwealth Games. However, In Karnataka nearly 99% of government PU colleges does not have physical education teachers, who are required to nurture the available talent.
In 54 PU colleges of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and 45 of Udupi districts, physical education teachers are not available. In Karnataka, a whopping 1200 PU colleges does not have the teachers to impart physical education.

PU colleges are the vital stage where a sports person gets moulded. Many sports talents of rural areas study in government colleges. Due to lack of physical education teachers these talents are do not get chance to shine.
Out of the twin districts of DK and Udupi, only Navundar government PU college has a physical education teacher.
Among the 205 private and aided PU colleges in the twin districts, nearly 90% of the institutions have physical education teachers. However, among the 99 government PU colleges, only one has the physical education teacher. In these 99 government PU colleges, 23132 students are studying. Almost all of them are deprived of sports activities due to no physical education teacher in the colleges.
Maruti, C D Jayanna, deputy director of PU education of Udupi and DK says, “The approval of physical education teachers’ position throughout the state needs to be done by the government. A proposal is already put forward to the government in this regard.”
