India in Touch with Others on Choice of IMF Chief

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS) India is constantly in touch with other countries on selection of the new head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Tuesday.

"I am regularly being informed what is happening. I am in touch with other finance ministers," Mukherjee told reporters when asked about India's role in the selection of the new chief of the IMF.

The race for the new IMF chief is hotting up after Dominique Strauss-Kahn recently resigned as managing director as he faces charges of trying to rape a maid in a swanky New York hotel suite.

Mukherjee said Indian officials were constantly in touch with the executives of the other IMF member countries for finding the replacement of Strauss-Kahn.

On the possibility of the new IMF chief coming from the developing countries, Mukherjee said it would depend on the shareholders. "Shareholders' voting powers are relevant factors. We have to keep it in mind," Mukherjee said on the sidelines of a conference here.

The 187-member international lender aims to replace Strauss-Kahn by June 30. Traditionally the top post of the IMF is held by a European. But the chorus is increasing that the new chief should be from the developing countries.
