Society living in harmony can achieve progress: Kharge

New Delhi, Jan 12 (IANS): Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge while remembering Swami Vivekananda on the National Youth Day on Thursday said that "society living in harmony can achieve progress".

Kharge said, "Swami ji believed in India's intrinsic values of 'Bharat Jodo', which is clearly enunciated by his historic address at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893, excerpts of which I want to recall today."

Kharge quoted Swami Vivekananda: "Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization, and sent whole nations to despair..."

Kharge said as crores of people, aspire and dream about unifying India and fighting prejudices and hate, Swamiji's message remains the guiding light for all of us, especially our youth.

"India is home to a fifth of the world's youth population. India's youth is vying for change, dreaming about a better and secured life.

"They aim to take India to the pinnacle of global progress and this can only be possible if we break the barriers of - religion, caste, language, ethnicity, colour, creed or gender.

"Only a society living in harmony can achieve this. So let us join hands to usher this change. Like Swami Vivekananda ji said - 'Arise! Awake! And stop not till the goal is reached'," Kharge added.

We can't clap with one hand. We all know who is creating disturbances worldwide for one particular ideology.

Easier said than done. When one community does not want education for their girls and want separate laws which are regressive, then how to live in harmony.

This man talks sense... We need peaceful society to lead progress... Pushing gullible people into division only creates chaos... Lot is being self flattered from 2014... Only time will tell how much really is the progress in the last 9 years... And how many scams are wailing to unfurl....

Agree. But Congress should stop appeasing one particular community. All are same as per Indian constitution. Then why you give special treatment to one particular community? Small example: In your home state your congress government started Tippu Jayanthi just to appease Muslims. We all know Tippu was a butcher and he has killed innocent christians and hindus. Canara catholics will tell you the fact. It is sad that congress leaders like Ivan D'souza, JR Lobo did not make any attempt to let the government remind of Tippus astocrities and they just resorted to Houdhu Basava attitude. Go to Kiren church where church authorities honour one Shetty family every year for safeguarding the church from Tippu's attack. It is impossible to get a single seat in Coastal Karnataka except Ullal and hence better not to dream to get back Mangalore and Udupi seats.
