Kundapur, Jun 9: Ramachandra Mogaveera (55), a fisherman by profession, living at Channammanamane near Byndoor in the taluk, was electrocuted due to a power line that was hanging close to the ground at Virupaksha in Tarapati on Wednesday June 8. Another person, Anant Mogaveera, who tried to save Ramachandra, suffered injuries. He is being treated in a hospital.

Ramachandra Mogaveera, who had given up consumption of non-vegetarian food because of the death of a close relative two weeks back, had not been participating in fishing activity. On Wednesday, he went to the river along with brother, Anant Mogaveera, for fishing with the help of a net that is tossed and spread over a small area with hands.

As they walked to the river bank, Ramachandra came in contact with a power line that was drooping at a low level, between two far off electric poles. The line was invisible because of rain and clouds. Instantly he tried to release himself with the help of hands, but was electrocuted. His brother, who tried to save him, also suffered injuries.

Anant is survived by wife, three sons, and a daughter. The locals said that Mescom had turned a deaf ear to their repeated requests over the last some years for increasing the height of this low-lying cable, which had been posing threat to lives.

Mescom executive engineer, Mahadevappa, who visited the bereaved family, announced a compensation of one lac rupees, and promised to the agitated locals, to take remedial steps. Byndoor sub-divisional officer, Siddesh, and some people’s representatives too visited the family and offered their condolences.
