Puttur, Jun 9: After a few relatives assaulted the newlywed groom, Muralidhar, his father, Hemant, and others who tried to save the two, at the office of the sub-registrar here on Wednesday June 8, several persons were injured. The policemen later arrested the three accused.

It is learnt that the marriage of Muralidhar (23) from Nehru Nagar here, who is a graduate and works as a carpenter and auto rickshaw driver, and Ramyashree (19), a first year degree course student of the local government first grade college, was solemnized on Wednesday. They were in love with each other since about a year, but the mother and maternal uncles of the girl were opposed to the alliance. The mother of the girl, in connivance with her brothers, was preparing to arrange the marriage of Ramyashree with another youth, against the girl’s wishes. Hemant, father of Muralidhar, intervened in the matter and arranged for the solemnization of the relationship between his son and Ramyashree at Goddess Mahamaya Temple on Wednesday.

When the concerned reached the office of the sub-registrar for registering the marriage, Lakshmi, mother of Ramyashree, and uncles of the bride, Devappa and Sundar, assaulted them with a sickle. The groom, his father, and others who tried to save them, were injured in the attack. The policemen of the town station, alerted by the public, rushed to the spot and took the three assaulters into custody. It is learnt that the three wanted to teach the groom and his family a lesson for conducting the marriage of Ramyashree without their consent.

Hemant was admitted to the hospital here.
