Mangalore, Jun 10: It is learnt that a number of people are facing problems on account of not filling the post of Wakf officer of Dakshina Kannada district. B Abdul Rahim, who worked in the post for a few months, opted for voluntary retirement with effect from May 5 this year. The vacancy created on account of his departure is yet to be filled.

The district Wakf officer plays an important role in issues like disposal of marriage registration applications from Muslim couples, particularly in case of those who have to apply for passports and visas for foreign travel. Even in case of the couples holding individual passports, non-issuance of marriage registration certificates creates problems.

The district boasts of highest number of mosques in the state. District Wakf officer, who functions as the secretary of district level Wakf advisory committee, is also expected to handle issues like release of grants to Madrassas and redressal of disputes. President of Dakshina Kannada District Wakf Advisory Committee, Usman Haji, has extracted a commitment from the department to post an officer to the vacancy within a week. He however, wants an efficient and honest officer to improve the handling of affairs as well as office management.
