Puttur, Jun 10: The body of Shantamma (47), wife of Devappa Moolya from Olamogeru Ajjikallu in Kumbra gram panchayat, which is located within the jurisdiction of Sampya police station in the taluk, was found floating in Adkasthala rivulet near Perla in Kasargod taluk on Thursday June 9.
It is gathered that Shantamma had been suffering from mental derangement since the last some years. On account of this problem, she had chopped off a portion of her leg with the help of a sickle, after placing her leg on a grinding stone, some years back. A prosthetic limb was later provided to her.
Shantamma, working in a bidi factory in Manjalapadpu here, had gone missing from her residence since Friday last, and a missing case had been registered in Sampya police station.
Her body, which got washed away in the rivulet, had got stuck in the weeds near the bank of the rivulet at Adkasthala. A local Congress leader named Amu Adkasthala, who saw the body, reported the matter to Badiyadka police station. The body was found to have been decomposed, and son of the deceased woman, Prashant, identified it. Because of the force of water, her artificial limb had got separated from the body.
Locals said they had seen Shantamma alighting from a bus at Chalyadka, Prashant said, adding that further enquiries towards locating the whereabouts of his mother had not yielded any fruits.
Post mortem was conducted at Kasargod general hospital. A case was registered at Badiyadka police station in this connection.
