Bangalore: Auto Permit Irregularities: Karnataka High Court Seeks RTO Registers


Bangalore, Jun 10: The high court on Thursday expressed its consternation over the irregularities in issuing auto permits at the Jayanagar Road Transport Office (RTO), when it was brought to the notice that the instances of permits being issued in different names against a photo of a single person. The court then directed the RTO to produce the permit registers on Friday.

Auto drivers associations had challenged the state government’s order to issue 20,000 fresh auto permits in Bangalore.

The petitioner brought to the notice of the court of various irregularities committed in the Jayanagar RTO. The petitioners submitted that five permits were issued in five different names against the same photo and five permits were issued in the same name with five different photos.

Justice Abdul Nazeer observed, “It is nothing but daylight robbery. It is hard to believe that such a thing happens in a city like Bangalore. If it is true, it has to be stopped. We have to shunt out these kinds of officers. It should be probed by either the Lokayukta or the CID or I will request the court to take it as a suo motu case.”

Nazeer then directed the RTO of Jayanagar to submit in the court on Friday the details of the strength in the cadre of the RTO on deputation and the number of people sent outside Bangalore on deputation.
