Bellary, Jun 15: The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) appointed by the Supreme Court to examine the complaints against the mining companies in the state, has recommended suspension of mining activities in respect of eleven mining companies operating in Hospet, Sandur, and Bellary. The recommendation was made on Tuesday June 14.

CEC has been undertaking a survey of areas in the mining belt here. It took the extreme step cited above, after finding blatant irregularities in the functioning of these mines. At the same time, sources said that CEC has refused to divulge the names of these companies.

These companies have also been instructed not to lift the stock of iron ore already extracted and stored in their premises. The other three companies which came under the scanner of the CEC, have been allowed to continue with their operations, it is learnt.

CEC, which is entrusted with the responsibility of examining the complaints of violation of mining area, identification and marking of allotted borders, and other irregularities, is in the second phase of its survey in this part of the state.
