Mangalore: Spread of Malaria in Kinnigoli - Cause for Concern

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 17: With each passing day, more cases of malaria are being reported from Kinnigoli in the taluk and surrounding areas. This infectious disease, which spreads through mosquitoes, is predominantly seen in areas where hygiene is not given enough attention.

The first case of malaria of this season was reported about a month back. Construction workers in the multi-storied buildings coming up by the side of Kinnigoli bus stand were the first to be infected with malaria. The major part of this work force comprises migrant labourers.

Doctors of different private hospitals have reported increase in the number of malaria patients visiting them for treatment. Three members of a family got admitted into a private hospital on Thursday, after exhibiting symptoms of malaria.

It is felt that malaria has been setting firm foot in places where construction workers live, as they do not give prominence to cleanliness and hygiene. The fact that standing rainwater at many places have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes has also complicated the problem.
