Bangalore, Jun 18: Abdul, husband of Unnisa Rehamat (34), resident of Muneshwar Nagar in Padmanabhanagar in the city, threw acid on his wife on Friday June 17. He disappeared from his home thereafter. The area where this heinous act was committed, falls under the limits of Subrahmanyapura police station.

Rehamat, who suffered burns on the right side of her face and 50 percent of her back, was admitted into DG Hospital in Padmanabhanagar. Her condition continues to be critical, and she is being cared for at the intensive care unit of the hospital.

The couple, hailing from Tiptur in Hassan district, had married about 13 years ago. Their marriage did not have prior consent of Rehamat’s family, and the couple has two female children.

Abdul is involved with share dealings, while his wife operates a retail cloth shop. After the children went to school on Friday morning, differences of opinion on a frivolous issue gave rise to heated arguments between Rehamat and her husband. In a fit of rage, Abdul picked up an acid bottle he had previously brought, threw it at his wife, and fled from his home.

It is learnt that Abdul was the one who took the lead in coaxing Rehamat to marry him, when she was studying in a college. He forcibly brought her to Bangalore, and married her. The two families got engaged in dialogue thereafter, and Reamat’s family had to relent thereafter. Rehamat, it is learnt, was not interested in the alliance, but was compelled to live with Abdul due to circumstances beyond her control. Abdul used to doubt her character often, and fought with her repeatedly, and also pestered her to bring dowry from her parents, it is said.

Unnisa, who had decided to put an end to her miseries, decided to get divorce from her husband. She had applied for the divorce, and as per the rules governing Muslim marriages, she was to wait for 40 days before the divorce could get legal sanctity. Abdul knew that Friday was the 40th day since she applied for divorce, and that she would be free the next day. Their two young children have no one to look up to at present, as their father has run away, and their mother is battling for life.
