Oil Spill Feared Off Kutch Coast

Gandhinagar, June 21 (IANS) An oil spill has been reported Tuesday at the Adani port in Mundra in Gujarat's Kutch following a rupture in the pipeline of a ship. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has been alerted to monitor the situation.

According to a delayed report Tuesday, the leak occurred a few days ago. However, no official confirmation on when it occurred was available.

S.K. Nanda, principal secretary for environment and forests, told IANS that he has directed the Gujarat Maritime Board and the GPCB to monitor the situation.

According to reports, an HPCL chartered ship from Great Eastern Shipping Company was unloading high speed diesel when the pipe ruptured, causing the oil spill.

Though the valves were shut down, about 100,000 litres of high-speed diesel valued around Rs.4.4 crore leaked into the sea, the report said.
