Mangalore, June 23: Leading trade unions including CITU, AITUC, HMS, INTUC and Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh staged a protest against hike in petrol price in front of the deputy commissioner's office here on Thursday June 23.
CITU State Committee vice-president B Madhava said that the unprecedented rise in petrol price has affected lives of common man adversely and that centre has been indifferent to their woes. He flayed the central government’s proposal of further hiking the price of LPG and diesel. He noted that petrol price were stable but soon soared once the results of assembly election were out in five states, it shows the ‘crafty’ approach of government to win people.
He also noted that the main reason for the uncontrolled price hike is increase in tax rate.
BMS district president Vishwanath Shetty said that the increase in prices of other commodities that are causing imbalance in the lives of poor is infact the consequence of high fuel prices.
Stressing on the fact that there were no amendments made in pay-scale structure of labourers, Shetty criticized the central government for favouring capitalists by neglecting labour class.
Around 200 protestors gathered in protest. The agenda of the protest included issues like petrol price hike and measures to curb it, and social justice for labourers and common people in the country.
CITU district general secretary Vasanth Achari and honorary president of the union Sunil Kumar Bajal among others were present.
