Udupi: Lady Passenger Alleges Sexual Harassment - Two Drivers Held

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jul 1: The district policemen took into custody two drivers of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation on a complaint filed by a teenager that they had sexually harassed her while travelling in their bus. The drivers have been identified as Ashok Kumar and Ramu, drivers of the bus which runs between Coimbatore and Kollur.

The complainant, a 16-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu, who presently resides in Nitte in Karkala taluk, had travelled by the said bus by boarding the same at Satyamangalam along with her younger brother on Wednesday evening. The bus had only a handful of passengers. While one of the drivers was driving, the other sat by her side on the last seat by asking her brother to shift to another seat, it is said. Thereafter, the drivers switched their roles, and the person who handed over the driving to the other, started making sexual advances, the girl said.

When the girl alighted from the bus at Padubidri at around 2.15 am on Thursday, one of the drivers handed over a chit containing his mobile number. The girl and her brother reached home and narrated their ordeal. The family members of the girl waited for the bus to return to Udupi in the afternoon, and handed the drivers over to the police after taking them to task. The town police have since transferred the case to Padubidri police station.

Nasir, dont get me wrong brother, agreed..no offense. however the fact is that handling such situations in a communally sensitive neighborhood can cause issues..it may be other way round as well, so the communities and elders should build trust to mitigate such events where a culprit can often drive the issue to get communal mileage and cause unwanted disturbance.

    Dear Mr Arjun,
Civilization is not depends upon their religion. And mentioning the name of the religion in your comment was not a part of civilization. If someone is doing wrong, his community is not responsible for it other than his personality. Duty of civilized person is to stop others doing wrong things and teach them to do good things. Good and bad persons are there in all. Religions.

STRICT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN AGAINST BOTH THE DRIVERS, BOTH SHOULD GET PUNISHMENT. GIRLS PARENTS HAVE TAKEN RIGHT STEPS WITHOUT IGNORING THIS MATTER. GOD BLESS THEM.

The similar situation happened to a relative of mine..late night travel due to emergency..bus had handul passangers, one muslim youth tried to sit next to the teenager girl, despite having all other seats empty..now the girl asked him to move away and sit in other seat..he gave a smart ass comment "dont you like me", I wish I were there to show how much we liked him..the bus was transiting a predominantly muslim area..even the bus drivers were relectunt to question the passanger for his unruly behavior..

Again..this is not to target any community..just describing the circumstances involved..as such..we have pious and religious muslim who are better civilized than some from our own community..I remember reading a article by lady who got stranded while travelling to Manglore from Bombay, she got a lift on a bus which was carrying pious muslims who had just done their holy trip to Mecca..she travelled safely and all the passengers respected her privacy and treated her with dignity..Again we need to interact as community and build brigdes around our common goals..such as believing in core message of every religion and fight this menace of stray incidences happening in the society..Amen!

Kudos to the victim for having gathered the guts to catch the culprits on the return journey!

This incident is to be viewed very seriously by the police and the concerned authorities. It is a major offence onboard a Govt. vehicle. Instead of protecting the passenger, these rogues were out to outrage her modesty. Appears like both the accused have done this earlier too hence taken this teenaged girl for granted. A thorough investigation should be initiated and all efforts should be done to convict the guilty.

If we have more people like this young girl and her parents .. none will dare to indulge in eve teasing .. wonder why she did not enlist the help of the other passengers when it was obvious that both the drivers had dirty intentions ??

Before handing over to ploice this driver would have been given a nice treat by public / colleage student of Nitte by shaving his head & taking him in the street& publising his photo in his respective native place on TV.
