Mangalore: Monsoon Progresses – Rains Turn Brisker

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 7: Rainfall gained in momentum since Tuesday night all over Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Heavy rains have inflicted losses, and water level in rivers has risen. Huge waves were seen hitting the shore at Ullal. High level of water at Kulur Bridge briefly hampered smooth traffic.

Due to heavy rain, a cattle shed belonging to Idyadka Padmaiah Gowda in Charvaka village, Puttur taluk, crashed to the ground. As a result, five heads of cattle including three pregnant cows and two calves, died. Five more cows also suffered injuries.

Falling trees also inflicted damages on houses and roads at several places. Collapsed mud wall at Panjimogeru Viveknagar in the city damaged a toilet and water tank. Threat of artificial floods looms large on various low-lying areas.

Four seventh standard students of the government higher primary school in Salethur near Vittla were injured, after the glass tile fitted to the roof fell down because of incessant rain. The students had to be taken to a private hospital for treatment thereafter, as the community hospital in Vittal did not have doctors. Taluk panchayat member, Madhava Mave, who took the initiative in getting the students treated, said that the department, which was requested to demolish this century-old building, had not yet given its nod. He also said that he had complained to the district medical officer about the sorry state of affairs at Vittal community hospital, one of the biggest in the district.

Kollur in Kundapur taluk registered 11 cms of rain, which was the highest in state. Other places got between five and eight cms of rain. The meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall measuring up to 125 mms during the next two days. It has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea because of the chances of gale blowing at a speed of between 45 and 55 knots.
