Mangalore, Jul 8: Shashikant Shetty representing Congress was elected as the sixth president of Mulky town panchayat on Thursday July 7. Yogish S Kotian, who already was in the post of the vice-president, was re-elected for the post.

Shashikant Shetty was elected for the second term from the eighth ward. The election to the two posts was held on July 7. Mangalore tahsildar, Ravichandra Nayak, was the returning officer for the election. The term of B M Asif, previous president, ended on July 7.

The town panchayat with 17 members, has nine Congress party. Both the candidates secured 11 votes each, including a vote each from the lone JDS member and MLA, Abhay Chandra Jain. Satish Anchan from BJP, who contested for the post of the president, and Purushottam Rao, who filed nomination for the post of the vice-president, secured seven votes each from their party members. Both of them were defeated.

The voting was conducted through show of hands. In addition to MLA, Abhay Chandra Jain, block Congress president, K Somappa Suvarna, immediate past president, Asif, chief officer, Harishchandra P Salian, and others were present.
