Udupi, Jun 3: Geetha Wagle, president of Udupi Mahila Congress said, “Indian women wrestlers who brought name and fame to India are sexually harassed by MP Brij Bhushan, president of Indian wrestler’s federation. The central government stays silent without responding to the protests by the Indian wrestlers. Union minister Smriti Irani is not reacting to the issue and when the press questioned MP Meenakshi Lekhi she ran away avoiding answering the press.”
Addressing a news conference on Saturday June 3, Geetha Wagle said, “On the occasion of inauguration of the new parliament building, PM Narendra Modi spoke about welfare of women when at the same time women wrestlers who were protesting were harassed and dragged by Delhi police. When women wrestlers brought medals to India, the prime minister called them to his house and clicked pictures with them but now he turned a blind eye and was cleverly deaf to this situation. Keeping in mind the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the central government is not taking any action against MP Brij Bhushan. Offenders are roaming without any worry but wrestlers who are not guilty have been arrested. We National Women Congress will always be in support of women wrestlers. We demand the resignation of MP Brij Bhushan and that no protection should be given by the prime minister and the home minister to the accused. He should be arrested immediately.”
Roshni Oliver, district RGPRS president, deputy president of Udupi Mahila Congress, Gopi K Nayak, secretary, Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje, gram panchayat members Sukanya poojary Kadekar, Pramila Suvarna and Laxmi Nayak were present.
