Bengaluru, Jun 15: Archbishop of Bengaluru, Dr Peter Machado, who also serves as the President of the Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops' Council and All Karnataka United Forum for Christian Human Rights, has expressed his appreciation for the Congress government's decision to repeal the controversial Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, 2022, commonly known as the anti-conversion bill. This decision is welcomed on behalf of the entire Christian community in the state.
"The repeal of this contentious bill is a commendable step towards upholding fundamental rights," stated the Archbishop, emphasizing that it validates the consistent stance taken by the Church and the Christian community. He further explained, "It reaffirms our belief that this legislation not only violated individuals' freedom of religion but also contradicted the provisions enshrined in Article 25 of the Indian Constitution. Article 25 guarantees the freedom to practice, profess, and propagate any religion, which is a fundamental right essential for a diverse and pluralistic society. Christians will always continue to work within the framework of the Indian Constitution, serving the state and the nation, and reaching out to all, regardless of caste and creed, with a special focus on the poor and marginalized."
The Anti-Conversion Bill in Karnataka, as well as in other states, has resulted in increased attacks on Christians, as it encouraged fringe elements to target and harm them. It fostered doubt, mistrust, and disharmony between communities. The Archbishop expressed his hope that other states will follow suit and withdraw similar bills.
Understanding the complexities involved in the process of repealing a law, the Christian community remains hopeful and confident that necessary support will be extended by all concerned parties at various stages. This collaborative effort is crucial to ensure a smooth transition and the complete withdrawal of the anti-conversion bill.
"I would like to take this opportunity to express gratitude once again to the Government of Karnataka for demonstrating courage and decisiveness in repealing this act. The acknowledgment of concerns raised by the Christian community and the subsequent actions taken to rectify the situation are commendable. This step will contribute to fostering an atmosphere of religious harmony, tolerance, and respect for all faiths in the state," added the Archbishop.
