Kundapur, Jun 16: Sea Erosion at Maravanthe Beach intensified due to the effects of Biparjoy cyclone. Huge waves lashed the shore and the stones that were put to prevent sea erosion got washed away into the sea. The waves are progressing further and the only connecting road is on the verge of getting collapsed.

Sea erosion began a week ago. However, it took a severe turn since Thursday. Electricity poles, coconut trees were washed away by the gigantic waves.

Fishermen of Maravanthe area are dejected. They have expressed their anguish at the local administration and the state government for not finding a permanent solution to the recurring issue. Though the sea erosion began a week ago, the district administration has not taken any measures to prevent the extent of damage that has occurred.

Local MLA Gururaja Gantihole, who was on tour to Bengaluru, cancelled his tour and returned to Maravanthe. He is trying to instil confidence among the fishermen community. He is also getting in touch with concerned officials to provide for emergency help.

Speaking to media persons, Gantihole said, “Byndoor constituency faces severe sea erosion among all the sea beaches of Udupi district. When I ask DC and other officials, they express helplessness. I have met the fisheries minister and apprised him of the situation. Government should immediately respond to the sea erosion problem of Maravanthe.”

Vasudeva Kharvi, president of Maravanthe Fishermen Seva Samiti said, “The sea erosion issue at Maravanthe is a long standing one. Last year during Taukte cyclone around 100 meters of land got washed away into the sea. Boat sheds got gobbled up by the sea. During that time we had only put sand bags and tried to prevent further entry of sea water into the land area. Whenever the sea erosion intensifies, the whole government machinery runs to this place. However, no one has taken initiative to find a permanent solution.”

Deepak Kumar Shetty, Mahendra Poojary, Suresh Shetty, Ashok Shetty and Anita were present.

British built gate way of India and today half Bombay is saved from Sea and erosion. For the past 75 years we are unable to build permanent solution. Only truck loads of big stones laid in unscientific manner. They do not want to use tetrapod's! We could've built permanent concrete barricades for 25% spent on unscientific and corrupt practices. Build gateway of India kind of structure at most affected areas.... good revenue too! Otherwise each year visit of white clad politicians and bandal talk!

Storms and Cyclones are like death, natures way to neutralize development, population and disease. But the settlers along the entire sea shores from Kerala to Maharashtra in the South of India, have been defying this cycle of nature by loss and crying for centuries! Best solution, relocate all these settlers to main land, even if they claim an end to their resource of living that is centuries old. One does not have to live on the beach to be a fisherman! Land was formed by receding sea waters, and now due to global warming, the waters are coming back. The amount of water in the oceans and seas and rivers are also governed by natures cycle. Man cannot change climate or alter nature without disastrous results, like running a highway along Maravanthe that has a sea on one side and a river on the other side. River water too comes from the ocean and not from a water tanker from a well. Solution, and the only one, build bridges and run a highway on this stretch that is so close to the sea, or reroute the highway inland, and relocate the people, who wish to have no more loss and sorrow, and let those live who protest and dont want a relocation for any reason! But ensure to register these fools. Just having an MP who has no education or idea on Nature and its forces, making an emergency visit with 50 onlookers, will not change things in Karnataka Kundapura, The local authorities should move their butts and address and work on the the situation, without the need for one man ,who is not living there to make promises like the one who made promises to those people on the shores of Malpe beach years ago when it was badly hit and eroded . Some eye wash remedial works were undertaken, like dumping large granite boulders to contain the high waves responsible for the erosion, but water finds its ways like a snake, and erosion cannot be stopped. Its nature and natural, only we humans have still to learn nature and respect its powers!
