Bantwal, July 10: A group of women from the National Rural Livelihood Mission and Streeshakti Sangha, in Veerakamba grama panchayat here have prepared earthworm manure under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and have earned income from it for the first time by selling it.

The unit has been functioning for the last six months. Rs 154 kilos of manure was collected for the first time. They have already sold 60 kilos of manure at the rate of Rs 120 per kg. The demand for the remaining manure has grown and the income is likely to be Rs 19,000.

The women learnt the process at a seminar held at the grama panchayat and programmes were organised by local Janashikshana Trust. The manure is being prepared at the Mangalipadav Anganwadi Centre.

Members of Stree Shakti Sanjivini Jagruti Vedike have applied to the grama panchayat for additional facilities at Mangilapadav Anganwadi centre. The initiative by local women is likely to make them financially self-sufficient.
