Puttur, Aug 10: Tension gripped the Golithottu gram panchayat meeting on August 9, as a medical officer, overwhelmed by a barrage of questions from villagers regarding the recent demise of a girl student, collapsed during the proceedings.

Dr. Shishira, the medical officer at the Nelyadi primary health care center, was the unfortunate individual who collapsed. The meeting, chaired by Janardhana Gowda, the president of the gram panchayat, took an unexpected turn.

The deceased girl student had initially sought medical treatment at the Nelyadi primary health care center and was later transferred to Puttur government hospital for advanced care, where tragically, she passed away.

Villagers voiced concerns about the circumstances surrounding her death and accused the medical officer of inadequate treatment when she initially visited the primary health care center.

Responding to the villagers' inquiries, Dr. Shishira explained, "Upon her arrival at the primary health care center, the condition of the deceased student, Mamatha, was critical. Recognizing the urgency, I promptly arranged her transfer to Puttur government hospital. Due to the unavailability of an ambulance, I administered emergency treatment for 20 minutes. Subsequently, she was transported to Puttur hospital in an ambulance equipped with an oxygen cylinder. Sadly, news reached me that Mamatha did not survive. She had been unwell for the past two to three months."

Despite the explanation, the villagers remained dissatisfied and continued to press Dr. Shishira for more answers about the circumstances leading to the student's death. Visibly distressed, the doctor retreated to a room within the gram panchayat building and collapsed. He was later admitted to the hospital in Puttur for medical attention.

The incident underscores the sensitive nature of the situation and the challenges faced by healthcare providers when dealing with tragic outcomes.
