Bantwal, Aug 10: Congress candidates Lalitha and Janardhana Poojary were elected as president and vice-president to the Veerakambha gram panchayat for a second term in the elections held.

The gram panchayat has 14 members and 7 among them belong to the Congress party and the remaining 7 belong to the BJP. As their strength was
equal, the elections were interesting.

The post of the president was reserved for woman belonging to the general category and that of the vice-president to backward classes A category. Jayanthi and Lalitha had filed their nominations for the post of president. Sandeep Poojary and Janardhana Poojary had filed their nominations for the position of vice-president. As all the candidates received an equal number of votes their victory was decided by a draw of lots.

Zilla panchayat assistant executive engineer G K Naik functioned as the electoral officer. Panchayat development officer Nishanth helped in the election process.
