Udupi, Oct 7: “The civic workers should make use of various facilities of schemes launched by the government for them,” said union minister of agriculture and farmer’s welfare Shobha Karandlaje. She was speaking after inaugurating the civic workers day celebrations held by Udupi district administration at Ajjarkad auditorium on Saturday.

“Udupi district is well known for cleanliness. The contribution by civic workers for the cleanliness in Udupi is relentless. Civic workers are working hard and have given priority for cleanliness for the survival of society during Covid pandemic.”

“Udupi district banned the practice of carrying shit for the first time in the state. A law is passed that manholes should be cleaned by means of machines. Several lives are saved because of that. The union government has launched the Safai Mitra and National Safai Karmachari Finance and Development corporation project. Civic workers can obtain
loans, health facilities, children’s education, accommodation, insurance and several other facilities. Every civic worker should make use of them,” she said.

MLA Yashpal Suvarna said that civic workers are risking their lives and doing their work. “The government schemes will be explained to them and the benefits will be made to reach their door steps,” he said.

Deputy commissioner Dr Vidyakumari said that the work of civic workers is invaluable. “Every citizen should join hands with them to keep their surroundings clean. Civic workers should look after their health. The government has launched insurance schemes for them. They should make use of medical check-ups for them once in six months. They
should make sure that their children obtain good education,” she said.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of sports competitions held for them. Ten civic workers among them were felicitated.

Municipal council standing committee president Srisha Bhat Kodavoor, former president Sumitra Nayak, former vice president Lakshmi Manjunath Salian, member Rashmi C Bhat, Swachh Bharat ambassador Joseph Rebello, municipal council members and others were present.
