Kolkata, Aug 29 (IANS): Stating that soaring prices of vegetables is a "created" phenomenon, West Bengal Agricultural Marketing Minister Arup Roy Sunday said legal action will be taken against those who are "intentionally" and "artificially" increasing the prices.
"We will visit different markets. We will verify the prices. If someone is intentionally and artificially increasing prices, the government will take legal action against him," Roy said after holding a meeting with the members of vendors association here.
"The skyrocketing prices of vegetables is created. We have to control it," he added.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, along with Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, visited Kole market and Gariahat market here and inquired about prices of vegetables and spices Saturday.
"We are concerned about the issue of price rise as the common man is suffering due to this issue. We have to see that both farmers and the common man can be provided with relief," she said.
Banerjee had also indicated that stern steps will be taken against black marketers.
Taking a dig at Banerjee's market visit, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Biman Bose Sunday said: "Visiting markets is good. It would have been much better if she, who was then a member of the cabinet, had protested when the BJP-led NDA government relaxed the Essential Commodities Act. Then the skyrocketing prices would not take place."
