Bhopal Tragedy Survivors to Observe Black Day

Bhopal, Oct 29 (IANS): The Bhopal gas tragedy survivors will observe a 'Black Day' Nov 1, the 56th Foundation Day of Madhya Pradesh, to protest the state government's inaction to help them get justice, survivors said Saturday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state has planned to celebrate the Madhya Pradesh Day in a grand style. Bollywood yesteryear actress Hema Malini and playback singer Asha Bhosle are to perform at a function that has been scheduled.

"We will observe a black day as there is resentment among the survivors over the state government's inaction to help them get justice," Abdul Jabbar, convener of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan, told IANS.

Jabbar said they have written to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, demanding setting up of a special court to expedite the proceeding of criminal case against those accused in the case.

The letter also demands proper compensation on the basis of the enhanced figures of deaths and disability that came up later among others.
