Iran Central Bank Deputy Head Held for Embezzlement

Tehran, Oct 30 (IANS): Hamid Pourmohammadi, the deputy head of Iran's central bank, has been arrested for his involvement in a $2.6-billion embezzlement case, Xinhua reported Saturday.

Pourmohammadi was arrested along with another banking official in one of Iran's biggest fraud cases, prosecutor general Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei said.

So far 33 people have been arrested in the case. Mohseni-Ejei, who was assigned to probe the case Sep 15, however, did not reveal the names of other detained people.

It is alleged that a company named Amir Mansour Aria has swindled nearly $2.6 billion out of several Iranian banks, by taking advantage of government recommendations to purchase assets of some state-owned enterprises, including Iran's second largest steel maker Khuzestan Steel Company.
