Mangalore: Rain Peters Off – Lightning Inflicts Losses, Cyclone Developing

Mangalore, Nov 5: Rainfall was considerably lower in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on Friday November 4, as compared to previous days.

The city and Sullia experienced drizzle during the day. Karkala, Udupi, and Kundapur taluks received moderate rain on Friday afternoon. However, lightning continued to be experienced at various places.

Two houses in Kadandale Jodukatte near Moodbidri were damaged due to lightning on Thursday. The roof of Babu Poojary’s house developed holes at eight places as a result, electrical wiring got burnt down, and walls developed cracks. The house of his neighbour, Alex D’Souza, also suffered extensive damages to windows and electrical wiring. Six coconut trees, eight areca nut trees and pump set also were burnt down in the incident. MLA, Abhay Chandra Jain, visited the spot, and said that he will urge the government to pay compensation to the affected families from out of natural calamity fund.

On Friday, lightning also damaged houses of Ananta Padmanabha Acharya in Banabettu in Havanje village, Udupi taluk, and Belakuhanti in Heggunje Neerujaddu. Houses owned by Girija Mogaveera in Japti, Kundapur taluk, and Paddu Kulalti in Molavalli Belagodu, were also damaged due to lightning.

The meteorological department has observed that the drop in the air pressure witnessed some days back, which had developed into a cyclonic storm, got weakened at Oman shores. At the same time, another low air pressure spot has developed over Arabian Sea, which might develop into cyclone within a day, it has warned. As build up of thick clouds has been observed over Bay of Bengal, the department has alerted people about chances of heavy rain coupled with lightning visiting various places in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.
