Mangaluru, Nov 20: V T Rajshekar, a renowned journalist, writer, and thinker known for his advocacy of Dalit rights, passed away on Wednesday morning at a private hospital in Mangaluru. He was 93.
Rajshekar, who had been residing in Shivabhag, Mangaluru, was reportedly unwell in recent months. A veteran journalist, he had an illustrious career with The Indian Express spanning over two decades before founding Dalit Voice magazine in 1981. Through the magazine, Rajshekar championed the cause of Dalits, sparking nationwide debates with his thought-provoking writings.
A staunch advocate of reservation and Dalit rights, Rajshekar was a vocal critic of Brahmanism and the Sangh Parivar. He authored numerous impactful works and was the recipient of several national and international awards for his contributions to journalism and social justice.
Rajshekar is survived by his son, Salil Shetty, a former secretary general of Amnesty International.
The final rites will be held on Thursday at Onthibettu in Udupi.
