Udupi: MGM College celebrates 75th anniversary with grandeur and tradition

Udupi, Dec 2: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) College marked a momentous occasion with the celebration of its 75th anniversary from November 29 to December 1.

The three-day Amrutha Mahotsava event was a grand celebration, blending cultural heritage, academic achievement, and community spirit. This milestone in the college's illustrious history brought together students, faculty, alumni, and community members to celebrate the institution's legacy of excellence and its contribution to education.

The celebrations began with the inauguration of the T Mohandas Pai memorial Amrutha Soudha and an exhibition showcasing student talent and efforts, on November 29.

T Sathish U Pai, president of the MGM College Trust, inaugurated the new building, with blessings from Vidyasagara Theertha Swamiji of Sri Krishnapura Matt, Udupi. Swamiji expressed his hopes for the continued growth and success of MGM College, praising its impact on the community, said, “This land is blessed, and MGM College has grown significantly since its founding. The education it provides is both a blessing and a responsibility. I pray for its continued success.”

Dr K Vidyakumari, deputy commissioner of Udupi, formally inaugurated the exhibition. She expressed her admiration for the display, noting, “The exhibition is a testament to the dedication and vision behind this celebration. It showcases various themes that reflect the institution's journey and achievements. I hope this institute continues to excel in all areas during this milestone year.”

Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna, speaking at the event, noted the importance of education in overcoming financial challenges. “Udupi is built on three pillars, coastline, temples, and institutions like Manipal and MGM. I encourage students to pursue education at these esteemed institutions,” he stated.

Dr H S Ballal, pro vice-chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), expressed gratitude to the former principals of MGM College for laying a strong foundation for the institution’s success. He also praised the establishment of a new skill development Institute to cater to the growing need for skilled professionals in the developing economy.

Lieutenant general (Dr) M D Venkatesh and C A B P Varadaraya Pai also addressed the gathering, praising MGM College for its academic excellence and its contribution to shaping students’ futures. Both emphasised the college’s role in fostering character-building alongside academic achievement.

The inaugural ceremony concluded with felicitation of management members and retired faculty. Professor Laxminarayana Karanth of MGM Degree College welcomed the gathering, and Dr Devidas S Naik, principal of MGM Evening College, delivered the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Ashwini C Acharya, head of the English department, and Dr Vijayalakshmi M, assistant professor of Sanskrit.

The programme witnessed the presence of president Dr T M A Pai Foundation T Ashok Pai, trustee MGM College Trust Vasanthi R Pai, pro vice-chancellor, MAHE Manipal Dr Narayana Sabhahit, principal MGM PU College Malathi Devi, director TMPSDI T Ranga Pai.

The second day featured a vibrant cultural procession from Mahatma Gandhi Main School to the MGM College campus, flagged off by Dr T Ashok Pai, president of the Dr T M A Pai Foundation. The procession showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Participants included the Chende Team, Yakshagana Troupe, Huli Vesha dancers, Nasik Band, and the TMA Pai Tableau. Students from MGM College, MGM PU College, and MGM Evening College joined the procession at Kalsanka, adding enthusiasm and energy to the event.

The ceremonial lamp was lit by dignitaries using the lamp handed over by his holiness Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji of Sri Krishna Math, Udupi. The Swamiji, in his blessings, praised MGM College for fostering both academic excellence and cultural values.

Former principal professor M L Samaga reminisced about the college’s legacy, and said, “I was born in the same year the college was established. MGM has grown immensely, preserving tradition while fostering overall development. It remains a cultural hub, producing scholars and responsible citizens.” He also credited former principal Haridas Bhat for laying the institution's strong foundation.

Malathi Devi, principal of the PU College, welcomed the gathering, while professor Vanitha Maiya, head of the Commerce department, proposed the vote of thanks. Spoorthy K, assistant professor of English, compered the event.

The celebrations witnessed the presence of secretary AGE CA B P Varadaraya Pai, director TMPSDI T Ranga Pai.

The celebrations concluded with a valedictory ceremony graced by Vishwaprasanna Theertha Swamiji of Sri Pejawar Adhokshaja Math.

Swamiji, in his words of blessings praised the institution, saying, “MGM College not only provides degrees but also fosters knowledge with values. It has made many significant contributions to literature, languages, research, music, and drama. The previous principals and teachers have built a strong foundation, which will continue to grow. This institution emphasizes tradition alongside academics and has given many legends to society. As MGM attains autonomous status, it is a proud moment. May Lord Sri Krishna bless the Institution, its students, and faculty to achieve greater heights.”

Lieutenant general (Dr) M D Venkatesh, vice-chancellor of MAHE Manipal, remarked, “As we conclude the three-day celebration, I am proud to have participated in the inaugural and valedictory programmes of this esteemed institution. To the students, alumni, staff, and citizens of Udupi who contributed to this success, my heartfelt appreciation. MGM College has nurtured students who have earned global recognition. This institution stands out for its diverse disciplines, including science, commerce, technology, humanities, and theatre. Institutions are not just buildings; they are the gifts that shape future generations.”

The valedictory ceremony also included prize distributions for achievements in throwball, cricket tournament by AGE and a quiz competition organized by the NSS unit of MGM College.

The event was welcomed by Professor Laxminarayana Karanth, principal of the MGM College. Dr M Vishwanath Pai, HoD of computer science, delivered the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Suchith Kotian, HoD of journalism, and Rohini Nayak, lecturer of physics.

The event witnessed the presence of president, MGM College Trust T Satish U Pai, pro-chancellor, MAHE Manipal and president AGE Manipal Dr H S Ballal, pro vice-chancellor MAHE Manipal, Dr Narayana Sabhahit, secretary AGE CA B P Varadaraya Pai, principal, MGM PU College Malathi Devi, principal, MGM Evening College Dr Devidas S Naik, director TMPSDI T Ranga Pai, president of alumni association Surendnath Shetty, former principal Sreesha Aacharya, director RRC Jagdish, PTA president from PU and degree colleges and other dignitaries were present.

The event featured captivating performances, including a Yakshagana show by Yakshagana Kendra, Indrali, and a Veera Vrishasena Kalaga act.

A highlight was the fusion ensemble "URJA," blending Indian classical ragas with contemporary styles. Competitions such as throwball, cricket, and quizzes were conducted, with winners receiving prizes during the valedictory ceremony.
