Russian Election Chief Wants Transparent Ballot Boxes

Moscow, Dec 23 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russia's chief election official has proposed making ballot boxes fully transparent to prevent fraud at the presidential election next March.

"I will soon come forward with the proposal to speed up the process of making ballot boxes transparent," Electoral Commission head Vladimir Churov said.

Churov insisted the results of the Dec 4 parliamentary elections were valid and dismissed widespread allegations of fraud as a "provocation".

In an annual televised phone-in show, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin suggested installing webcams at all of Russia's polling stations.

He said the cameras should operate "round the clock, night and day".

Putin's United Russia party just retained its parliamentary majority at parliamentary polls, but saw its support decline sharply.
