Mumbai, Jan 10: The unexpected separation of AR Rahman and Saira Banu in November 2024, after nearly three decades of marriage, sent shockwaves through the industry and their fans. Months later, renowned playback singer Sonu Nigam, who has shared a professional journey with Rahman on iconic tracks like Satrangi Re (Dil Se) and Aayo Re Sakhi (Water), has opened up about Rahman’s deeply private nature and his approach to relationships.
In an exclusive conversation with O2 India, Nigam delved into Rahman’s enigmatic personality, describing him as someone profoundly focused on his work and faith. “He doesn’t form relationships in the conventional sense. He is not the kind of person who opens up easily. At least, I have never witnessed it,” Nigam revealed, reflecting on their first collaboration for the film Daud.
While acknowledging that Rahman might share a different dynamic with long-time acquaintances who knew him as Dileep before his rise to global fame, Nigam emphasized that the celebrated composer maintains a deliberate emotional distance. “He is not a friendly person in the traditional sense. He is entirely absorbed in his work,” Nigam explained.
Nigam also spoke about Rahman’s disciplined and spiritual approach to life, which extends to his interactions with others. “During our US tour, I noticed he stays away from gossip or any kind of negativity. He does his work, offers his prayers, and ensures he doesn’t hurt anyone’s feelings. He never speaks ill of others and remains detached from unnecessary distractions. His connection, I assume, is strongest with his family,” Nigam shared.
He went on to describe Rahman as a “unique personality” who values boundaries and introspection. “He doesn’t allow people to get too close to him, and that’s how it should be,” Nigam concluded, admiring Rahman’s ability to remain focused on his craft and personal principles.
While Rahman’s separation from Saira Banu continues to be a subject of speculation, Nigam’s insights offer a glimpse into the composer's steadfast dedication to his art and his distinct approach to relationships, setting him apart as one of the industry’s most intriguing figures.
