Mangaluru: Annual Catechism Day celebrated with gratitude at St Lawrence Church & Shrine, Bondel

Mangaluru, Feb 26: The Annual Catechism Day was celebrated with deep devotion and gratitude at St Lawrence Church & Shrine, Bondel, on Sunday, February 23. Fr Ivan Peter Cordeiro, assistant manager of Codialbail Press, presided over the Eucharistic celebration at 8:30 a.m. The Mass was concelebrated by parish priest Fr Andrew Leo D’Souza and assistant parish priest Fr William D'Souza, who also serves as the director for Sunday Catechism. The parish children led the liturgy, while the children's choir enriched the ceremony with solemn and uplifting melodies.

In his homily, Fr Ivan Peter Cordeiro emphasized the vital role of Catechism in nurturing children's faith, guiding them on their spiritual journey, and deepening their relationship with God. He highlighted that faith is a treasure passed down by our ancestors and that it is our duty to do the same for future generations. Catechism, he said, is not just an option but a responsibility for all believers, as it teaches the commandments of Jesus and strengthens one's commitment to His teachings.

The second part of the event was held at the St Lawrence English Medium School auditorium. It began with a heartfelt prayer song by the children. The dignitaries on the dais were welcomed with a rose, symbolizing appreciation.

The program was beautifully hosted by Grade 9 students. Jovial D’Souza extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries and guests, while Grade 10 students Lawrence D’Souza and Vinola Braggs shared their personal experiences and insights on their Catechism learning journey. Elizabeth Pinto, secretary for Sunday Catechism, presented a brief annual report, highlighting key activities and achievements of the year.

The event was graced by Fr Ivan Peter Cordeiro, Fr Andrew Leo D’Souza, Fr Peter Gonsalves, principal of St Lawrence English Medium School, Fr William D'Souza, assistant parish priest, along with parish council vice president John D’Silva, secretary Santhosh Misquith, Catechism coordinator Lavina Menezes, secretary Elizabeth Pinto, Br Balaswamy, and secretary of the Bible & Catechism Commission, Lavina Cutinha.

As the chief guest, Fr Ivan Peter Cordeiro encouraged parents and attendees, emphasizing that Catechism nurtures faith, fosters talent, and strengthens moral values. He praised the role of teachers in imparting faith and values to children and stressed the importance of raising them with strong moral foundations.

Parish priest Fr Andrew Leo D'Souza expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of Catechism Day and the Sunday Catechism classes. He gave special appreciation to Fr William D'Souza, Lavina Menezes, Elizabeth Pinto, and all the dedicated teachers for their commitment and service.

Fr Peter Gonsalves highlighted that Catechism classes help children grow in faith and build a strong foundation of values. He urged parents to actively nurture their children's faith and ensure their regular participation in classes.

Fr William D'Souza, director of Sunday Catechism, stated that Sunday Catechism strengthens faith and helps shape children into better Christians. He expressed his gratitude to all the teachers for their dedication and service.

To mark Catechism Day, students from Grades 1 to 8 presented a variety of engaging performances, including a captivating Bible skit and group dances that conveyed faith-based messages through creative storytelling and dramatizations.

Students who showed dedication by attending daily Mass, Sunday Catechism classes regularly, and excelling in exams and projects were recognized and awarded for their commitment and hard work. The prizes were distributed by the dignitaries on the dais. Teachers and volunteers were honored with a token of appreciation presented by Fr William D'Souza in recognition of their dedicated service.

A large number of parents, teachers, and children gathered to witness and celebrate this special occasion. Towards the end of the program, Denith Rodrigues proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to everyone involved. Fr William D'Souza led the grace before the meal. The event concluded with a joyful gathering, where lunch and ice cream were served to all children and parents.
