Mumbai, Apr 1: In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, the Maharashtra Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved the introduction of e-bike taxis across the state on Tuesday. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the initiative aims to combat air pollution while simultaneously generating employment opportunities.

The introduction of e-bike taxis is expected to create around 25,000 jobs, with 10,000 positions in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and an additional 15,000 in other parts of Maharashtra. Sarnaik emphasized that bike taxis are already operational in 22 states across India.

The e-bike taxis will offer affordable fares, estimated at Rs 3 per kilometer, making them a cost-effective alternative to traditional transport options like Ola, Uber, and auto-rickshaws.

The initiative is also designed with safety in mind, with mandatory partitions between driver and passenger, GPS systems, and helmet requirements for pillion riders. Additionally, e-bikes will feature yellow paint for easy identification, and a temporary cover will be provided during monsoon.

As part of the plan, the state government is considering providing Rs 10,000 grants to the children of traditional kaali-peeli taxi drivers to help them transition to e-bike taxis. The proposal is part of the Chief Minister’s 100-day action plan and aims to promote cleaner, safer, and more affordable transportation options for the people of Maharashtra.
