Mumbai, Apr 4: In a major cyber heist, a cybercriminal managed to siphon off Rs 11.34 cr from a Powai-based solar and wind mill manufacturing firm by executing a sophisticated email spoofing attack. However, swift action by Mumbai's cyber police led to the recovery of Rs 11.2 cr within three hours—marking one of the largest recoveries by the city’s cyber unit.

The fraud came to light when the company’s chief accountant noticed irregularities while reviewing financial transactions. Upon discovering unauthorised debits, the matter was promptly reported to the 1930 Cyber Helpline and West Cyber Police.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the attacker had studied the firm’s communication pattern with its bank before compromising their bank-linked email ID. DCP (Cyber) Datta Nalawade said a team led by senior inspector Dattaram Chavan and inspector Nivruti Bawaskar successfully blocked eight accounts used in the fraudulent transfer.

The cyber cell is now tracking down the suspect behind the breach.

Notably, Mumbai’s cyber police have recovered Rs 160 cr in 2024 and Rs 49.25 cr in 2025 so far, underlining the growing efficiency of cybercrime response in the city.
