Washington, Apr 12: In a significant move for the global electronics sector, including in India, the US government has announced an exemption for smartphones and computers from its latest tariffs. The decision was made public on Saturday, marking a win for tech companies worldwide.
A notice from US Customs and Border Protection confirmed that products like smartphones and computers would be excluded from President Donald Trump’s 10% global tariff, as well as the steep 145% tariffs on Chinese imports. This exemption applies to products entering the US or leaving warehouses from April 5 onwards.
Additionally, the tariff relief extends to various other electronic devices and components, such as semiconductors, solar cells, and memory cards. This development is particularly beneficial for companies like Apple, which manufactures iPhones and other products in China.

This announcement follows the Trump administration’s imposition of a hefty 145% tariff on Chinese imports, raising concerns across the tech industry. However, President Trump had previously hinted at offering some exemptions for certain products. "There could be a couple of exceptions for obvious reasons, but 10% is a floor," Trump had stated aboard Air Force One on Friday.
Meanwhile, India and the US are expected to conclude the first phase of their bilateral trade agreement within the 90-day tariff pause. Negotiations will primarily take place through video conferencing, with potential in-person meetings if necessary, according to official sources.
